Bristol - Mrs. Sally Akard, 68, died in Bristol Memorial Hospital, at 7:30 a.m. Wednesday.
She was the widow of Sam E. Akard. Born in Hawkins County, Mrs. Akard was the daughter of the late Oregon Hounchell Owens.
She was a retired teacher, having taught in the Bristol school system a number of years prior to her retirement in 1954. She was a member of the State Street Methodist Church.
Survivors include: one daughter, Mrs. Richard Riddle, Kingsport; and one brother, John Owens, Church Hill. She is also survived by two grandchildren.
Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the Akard Funeral Home Chapel. Dr. H. Olin Troy will officiate. Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery.
Paulbearers will be Dr. J. E. Long, James Reser, Dr. N. J. Chew, Clyde Reser, George Vance, J. Meng Lipscomb, T. O. Cowan Jr., Haskell Harr, Allie Bristow and Edgar Hudson.
The body will remain at the funeral home until time for the service.

Keith W. Waitt, 77, of Westfield, formerly of Sheridan, died Friday, Dec. 31, 2010, at St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis.
Keith was born Oct. 12, 1933, in Sheridan, to the now late Frank and Ethel (Walker) Waitt. He graduated from Sheridan High School in 1952.
He married Mary Lou Pickett on Nov. 4, 2005; she survives.
Keith was a veteran of the United States Army. He was a lifelong farmer. He also worked for Pickett Oil Company and Biddle Manufacturing Company of Sheridan.
He loved his family and spending time with his grandchildren. His passion was his love of horses. He, together with his brother, Grover, raised Belgian Draft horses. They enjoyed showing their horses at local festivals and parades and anywhere an occasion presented itself.
Keith was a member of Fairview Christian Church, Lebanon, and Sheridan K.V. Elliott Post 67 of the American Legion. He served as a volunteer with the Sheridan Fire Department for over 28 years. He also served on the Hamilton County 4-H Council for nine years.
In addition to his wife, survivors include two sons, Kenny (Michelle) Waitt of Cicero and Kent Alan (Brenda) Waitt of Sheridan; one stepson, Robert W. Pickett of Sheridan; one stepdaughter, Lou Anne (Doug) Green of Westfield; four granddaughters, Krissy Waitt, Katie Waitt, Kayla Waitt and Kelsie Waitt; two stepgrandsons, Christopher Robbins and Joshua Robbins; one stepgranddaughter, Casey Green; one stepgreat-granddaughter, Saya Erin Robbins; one sister, Geraldine Akard of Alexandria, Va.; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by both parents; three brothers, Ralph Waitt, Clark Waitt and Grover Waitt; and three sisters, Thelma Griffin, Melva Boyer and Geneva Sims.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt and prayerful gratitude to Dr. Kent Erb and staff, Dr. Doug Pitts and Dr. Robert Strawbridge for their kindness and devoted professional care: “You are truly a blessing to your patients, their families and your profession.”
Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 4, at Kercheval Funeral Home, 306 E. 10th St., Sheridan. Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 5, at the funeral home, with the Rev. Jim Kyle officiating. Interment will take place at Crown View Cemetery, Sheridan.
