BASIC FACTS
Raymond William Bouton was born on 3 September 1898 in Tennessee.4 He was born on 3 September 1899 in Sullivan Co., Tennessee.5 He and Ida Opal "Opal" Phillips were married on 28 October 1917 in Sullivan Co., Tennessee.4 He died on 29 December 1987, at age 88, in Bristol, Sullivan Co., Tennessee.4,5 He was buried in Poplar Ridge Christian Church Cemetery, Piney Flats, Sullivan Co., Tennessee.5 Raymond William Bouton had reference number 26769. He was a Farmer - general farming (1920); laborer - general farming (1930.)2,3 He was enumerated on the census in Sullivan County, Tennessee (1920, 1930.) From an Bouton genealogy supplied by Verna Bouton
Raymond William Bouton was born 3 September, 1899 in the Bluff City area of Sullivan County, Tennessee. He was the son of William Elbert "Bert" Bouton and Sarah "Sallie" Effie Denton Bouton.
Raymond married Ida opal Phillips on 28 October, 1917. Opal was born 9 September 1898, the daughter of Noah David Phillips and Eliza Margaret "Maggie" Akard Phillips of the Enterprise Community of Sullivan County, Tennessee. Opal's parents were lovingly known as "Uncle Note" and "Aunt Maggie" by kin folks and neighbors.
When Raymond and Opal were first married, they lived with her parents in the Old Akard Homestead, located near the Holston River in the Enterprise Community of Piney Flats, Tennessee, Sullivan County. It was there that their only child, Verna, was born.
Raymond helped his father-in-law farm and grow vegetables for sale. He also had a license to sell fish.
In the early 1920's, Raymond helped in the building of the first Rainbow Bridge over Holston River in the Enterprise Community. This bridge was not built by modern means, but by manpower and horsepower. The cement was mixed by hand and carried in wheelbarrows and poured into molds. The steel pilings were driven by manpower, not machines. Several of the men in the community worked on the bridge, including Raymond's brother-in-law, Paul Phillips, Lee Cross, Raymond and Albert Morrell among others. The bridge remained in use until 1950 when a new bridge was required nearby due to the Tennessee Valley Authority project which flooded the Holston River and created Boone Lake.
Later, for a short time, Raymond worked at the Meade Fiber Corporation in Kingsport, Tennessee where he worked in making book bindings. He soon decided he preferred the farm life.
In 1927, Raymond moved his family to the farm of Mr. Henry D. DeVault which was located in the 20th Civil District of Sullivan County, Tennessee. The address today is the corner of Rice Cross Road and Sportsman Dock Road, Piney Flats, Tennessee.
The farm consisted of 94 acres and was deeded to Raymond and Opal by Mr. DeVault for taking care of him.
In a few years, Raymond was able to buy additional acres nearby which included a tenant house.
As a result of the TVA project, the Holston River was flooded creating Boone Lake.
Raymond's farmland adjacent to the lake was flooded, including the destruction of his tenant house. Rather than build a new tenant house, Raymond and Opal had a new house built for themselves near the old DeVault House. They used the old house for their tenant farmer and moved to their new home 2 October, 1952.
Although Raymond was a member of the Poplar Ridge Christian Church and Opal a member of the Holston Grove Lutheran Church, they attended the Union Church at Enterprise where all denominations came together to worship. It was there, under those conditions, that Raymond was the Sunday School teacher for a large young men's class for many years.
The Enterprise Church was also used for a school and was the school attended by Opal and her sister and brother. Raymond and Opal's daughter, Verna, also attended this school through the sixth grade. She then transferred to Mary Hughes School at Piney Flats for Junior and Senior High School.
