Trucker Burned in Crash; 42 New Refrigerators Damaged
An Indiana truck driver suffered severe burns when his tractor-trailer outfit, loaded with 42 brand-new General Electric refrigerators overturned and caught fire early Thursday.
Scene of the highway mishap was on U.S. Rt. 62 just a mile south of New Market on a double curve where accidents usually happen on that particular road.
The crash occurred about 3 A.M. The driver, confined at Highland District Hospital where he was brought by Hope Miller ambulance, was identified as George Franklin Cooley, 55, of New Albany, Ind. He suffered burns about the feet, chest, arms and face. He also had considerable shock, according to officers.
Cooley was northbound in his semi when his exhaust possibly burned out his brake cables, according to initial theories on the mishap. The driver was unable to provide any coherent details immediately.
Anyway, the truck went wide on the south part of the S-curve, swung off the west side of the highway and then back onto the pavement and overturned, skidding down the road for about 50 yards.
The cab flamed up and spread to the trailer, an aluminum covered unit. The refrigerators were in cardboard cartons and all caught fire.

HILLSBORO FIREMEN got a call to the scene at 3:10 A.M. They succeeded in extinguishing the blaze after a brief fight but at least half of the refrigerators were destroyed by fire and the others had some fire and heat damage and other damage from the crash itself.
The entire cab of the vehicle was burned. This part of the blaze was apparently fed by gasoline since it had drained across the road, flames following this to the guard railing on the west side.
The truck is owned by the Wardlow Interstate Trucking Company. It was enroute from Louisville, Ky., to Johnstown, Pa.
Haley wrecker answered a call to the scene. The trailer part was righted and some of the refrigerators were reloaded on it. Traffic was slowed but not fully blocked. The truck upset in the northbound lane of traffic.
Deputy Sheriff Carl Ayres investigated the accident. The truck driver's socks were virtually burnt off, along with his shirt.
The driver arrive at Highland District Hospital at 3:53 A.M. Hillsboro police stated that the hospital staff declined to call a physician unless a request for a specific physician was made by the accident victim. Police said, in view of a report from the scene that the driver appeared to be in shock and in critical condition, that they personally contacted a physician and he arrived at the hospital shortly after the ambulance did.
