Ellen "Ella" Jackson had reference number 37529. She was enumerated on the census in Clark County, Indiana (1870, 1880.) Died young.3 Ella is a bit of a puzzel. Her age in census records shows that she was born a year and a few months before her mother died. I have not been able to find her in the 1860 Census. In the 1870 Census she is living with her aunt, Mary (Jackson) Reynolds and family. Finally, in the 1880 Census, at age 21, she is shown living with her father. After that she seems to disappear.

James H. Ashabranner
BORN: NEW ALBANY, IND., DEC. 31, 1861.
BROUGHT up on a farm, at eighteen years of age James was apprenticed for one year to the blacksmith's trade, subsequently teaching school for about five years. He was then elected assistant secretary of the Y. M. C. A., and is now city librarian of the public library in his native town. His poems have appeared from time to time in the Current, Toledo Blade, and other periodicals.

NEWSPAPER ARTICLE - New Albany Weekly Ledger; 1931 10 09; Page: 1, Column: 4

DR. ASHABRANNER IS AUTHOR OF CLEVER BOOK SHORT STORIES
Dr. James H. Ashabranner, well known New Albany physician of East Market street, is the author of a volume of delightful short stories published by Dorrance and Company of Philadelphia and just on sale throughout the country. The book takes its title from the first story, "Out of the Deep."
The author, who has practiced medicine for many years, has mixed a bit of short story writing with his profession and has done it most successfully. His creations have found way into numerous magazines, probably more or less unnoticed by his very friends themselves. With the appearance of this, his first volume of stories in bound form, the talent of Dr. Ashabranner is recognized.
The book promises to have a very ready sale. The stories are greatly worth while. The author has included a wide variety of settings, themes and plots, ranging from dreamy Hawaiian shores to rustic Indiana village, from the flim-flamming of the rich youth by card sharks to the prosaic life of a mongrel dog.
"Out of the Deep" is interesting, entertaining and well written. Dr. Ashabranner is known to almost everyone in New Albany but his book will be read by thousands all over the country. His immediate friends and neighbors are all reading his book with genuine pleasure and satisfaction.

-------------
Dr. James H. Ashabranner, 75, widely known in medical and literary circles of the city for many years, died at 10:30 o'clock Wednesday night in St. Edward's Hospital from a heart ailment. He had been confined to the institution since January, 1932.
Dr. Ashabranner, who began the practice of medicine thirty-seven years ago, was graduated from the Electic medical College of Cincinnati in 1899. He located in New Albany and later removed to Los Angeles, where he remained only a short time. He returned to this city and continued his profession until he was stricken ill.
A native of Clark county, Dr. Ashabranner was born and reared in the vicinity of "Dead Man's Hollow." He received his early education in that county and also attended a college in Marengo, then known for it's high standing as an educational center.
For a number of years, Dr. Ashabranner served as secretary of the old Y. M. C. A. and also had charge of its library, which was the forerunner of the Public library made possible through the Carnegie Foundation. He became the first librarian in the new building at Bank and Spring streets.
Dr. Ashabranner joined the Floyd County Medical society sixteen years ago and was a former vice president of the organization. He was one of the founders of LaBelle Chapter, Order of Eastern Star, and served as its first worthy patron. He was also a member of DePauw Lodge of Masons and of the Trinity M. E. Church. Dr. Ashabranner and his wife, who died several years ago, were active in church work, taking prominent roles in musical programs.
Dr. Ashabranner enjoyed unusual literary talent and his work was recognized by nationally known magazines which published his contributions. His local contributions which were made exclusively to The Tribune, included chiefly poems on timely subjects.
He wrote frequently during the time he was confined to his bed in the hospital. His last poem, which appeared in this publication several weeks ago, entitled "Woman," was dedicated to Helen Louise Probert, chosen "Miss New Albany" in a bathing beauty contest.
Dr. Ashabranner traveled extensively. A few years ago he made a trip to Hawaii.
Surviving are a number of nephews and nieces.
The body is at the Mullineaux Chapel, Spring and Thirteenth streets, where funeral services will be conducted at 3 o'clock Friday afternoon. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery.
