He was educated High School student at the time of his death.3 NEWSPAPER ARTICLE - The Tribune; Seymour, Indiana; Friday, November 2, 1979; Page 1; (Newspapers.com):
Three-year search for son's "Killers" leads Bordon father to Jackson County
A father's three-year search to find the unknown persons he believes responsible for his son's highway death in Clark County in 1976 has led him to Jackson County.
In the course of his own personal investigation, he has finally badgered authorities into reopening the investigation into the son's death.
Lynn Cooley, 41, Borden, has spent three years trying to prove his 17-year-old son's death was no accident. He finally convinced the Clark County Coroner Edwin M. Coots Jr. to reopen the inquest into the death of Bruce W. Cooley.
As a result of the new inquest, the case has been referred to the prosecuting attorney for further investigation.
Cooley is convinced his son died of foul play and he has conducted a personal investigation for three years trying to prove his son was murdered. The original inquest ended in a ruling of accidental death.
Cooley believes his son's death occurred because of revenge. He said he was involved in solving some "sensitive cases" when he was an auxiliary deputy sheriff in Clark County.
The three-year search has led to Jackson County where the senior Conley said he had suspects. In fact, Cooley has four sets of suspects - either in Jackson of Clark County.
Young Cooley was killed on Aug. 28, 1976, when he lost control of his car as he was entering Interstate-65 from Ind. 31 in Clarksville. His car entered the path of a southbound car driven by a 68-year-old Louisville man who was injured.
A passenger in the Cooley vehicle told investigators the car's engine stopped for some reason and Cooley turned off the ignition when the malfunction occurred. When he did, the steering column locked and the car went out of control.
At an Oct. 4 inquest, testimony indicated a foreign substance (zinc oxide) was found in the car's engine which caused the engine to lock.
An expert on engines told the coroner zinc oxide is a "foreign" substance to an auto engine and it could, and likely did, cause the engine to stop running. An engine mechanic presented similar testimony.
A Clarksville police detective testified an analysis he ran on the engine showed the presence of zinc oxide.
Prosecutor Daniel Donahue has said he is undertaking an investigation and said if someone intentionally placed the substance in the car's gas tank, that person will be criminally responsible for the events leading to the Cooley youth's death.
The elder Cooley's investigation led him to a University of Louisville auto expert; he hired a mechanic to tear down the death car's engine; he even sent the engine to Detroit for safety checks.
He sought information from the Center for Auto Safety, a group associated with consumer advocate Ralph Nader. He even convened officials to improve the ramp from which his son's car plunged onto the top of a car below.
Cooley says all he wants is justice, saying, "Somebody killed the boy. And time is on our side. People have gone three years thinking they got away with the crime. But they'll trip themselves up yet."
