A graveside service for John J. Lieb, 89, of Enid will be 11 a.m. Monday, June 30, 2008, in Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery, Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The Rev. William Harnish will officiate. Full military rites will be conducted by the Air Force. A memorial service will be 10 a.m. Thursday, July 3, 2008, at First Presbyterian Church, Enid. Debbie Bourland, associate pastor, and Shorty Unruh will officiate. Arrangements are by Brown-Cummings Funeral Home. Visitation will be until 2 p.m. today at the funeral home.
He was born July 9, 1918, in Atkins, Iowa, to John and Jennie Klippel Lieb and died Wednesday, June 25, 2008, at St. Mary's Regional Medical Center.
He graduated from Atkins, Iowa, High School. He attended Coe College, Cedar Rapids, Iowa and graduated from Iowa State University, Ames, Iowa in 1941 with a bachelor of science degree in civil engineering. He married Caroline Bernice Wilt July 3, 1942, in Valdosta, Ga. She died Jan. 9, 1984. He served in the Air Force during World War II as a B-24 pilot in the Central Pacific. He retired April 1, 1966, with the rank of lieutenant colonel. He worked for the Air Force in civil service for 24 years in England, Ramstein Air Force Base, Germany, and various bases in the United States. He retired as deputy base civil engineer at Vance Air Force Base in 1993. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Enid, serving as an elder, American Society of Civil Engineers, Air Force Association and Royal Air Force Club in London, England. He married Letha Hare in August 1985, in Enid.
Surviving are his wife, Letha of the home; two daughters, Carola Gray of Fulton, Miss., and Pam Lieb of Rimrock, Ariz.; one son, Randal Lieb of Fayetteville, Ark; one stepson, Mike Hare of Idaho Falls, Idaho; two stepdaughers, Connie Bell of Barnsdall and Debbie Becker of Fairplay, Mo; five step-grandchildren; and 10 step-great-grandchildren.
