Pioneer Families Of Andrew S. & Menelia Bromley And Jim & Jane Scantlin
The Bromley Family
Andrew Smith Bromley was born in 1859 in Hopkins County, Texas. He moved to Indian territory which later became the State of Oklahoma and settled approximately three and one-half miles north of the present town of Lone Grove.
He was farming the home site when met Menelia Cummings and they were married in 1879. To them were born five children, four girls, Genevia, Georgia, Minnie, and Celeste, and one son, Walter.
Genevia and Georgia died at a very early age. Menelia died when the other three children were very young (Walter was only two), and Andrew raised them all alone.
Minnie married John Ledford and they lived in Fletcher, Oklahoma, until their deaths.
Celeste married Cleveland Phillips. They made their home in Fabens, Texas, until their deaths.
Walter stayed around Lone Grove and farmed with his dad.
He met Maggie Belle Scantlin and they were married January 17, 1915, in Lone Grove, while sitting in a buggy before the Methodist parsonage with Rev. Jacob Sessoms.
Their witnesses were E. A. Stringer and Dr. A. E. Ballard, Lone Grove pioneers.
Walter and Maggie had five children, Carvel (Buster), Wesley, Hubert, Velma and Bernice.
They eventually moved from Lone Grove to Keller and Rexroat community where they still farmed and Walter did road work for the county.
Andrew always lived with his son until his death in 1944 at the age of 84.
Walter continued farming until 1947 when he pulled up stakes and he, Maggie and Velma went to San Francisco, California, and worked for three years.
They then moved to Wichita Falls, Texas, and made their home. Walter worked for Two Bakeries before he retired.
He died in 1974 at the age of 86. Maggie lived ten years longer and died in 1984 at the age of 88.
Their oldest son, Carvel (Buster), died when he was 15-years-old. He had inflamatory rheumatism, known as dropsey back then.
Wesley died at the age of 67 in 1984 in a freak accident in Ajo, Arizona, at a coppermine where he had worked over 33 years as a locomotive engineer. Wesley had retired, but was working part-time when he fell under a train and was killed instantly.
He was married to the former Sally Jo Beal from Woodford. They had three daughter, one son, and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The family still lives in Ajo.
Velma, who is still single, continues to make her home at the family homeplace that she shared with her mother until Maggie's death.
Hubert married Dovie Slate from Milo in 1945.
The Scantlin Family
Maggie Scantlin Bromley was the daughter of another Lone Grove pioneer family.
Jim and Jane Scantlin moved to the Lone Grove area in 1910 from Texas, settling southeast of town, according to their daughter Ora Arnold.
Jim was a farmer and also a janitor for Lone Grove public schools for many years until his death in 1943, she his granddaughter, Bernice Bumbalow.
They had seven children, Claude, Huey, Roy, Dewey, Johnny, Willie, Ora, Maggie, and an unnamed baby boy, Ora said. Ora is the only one of the seven who is still living.
Ora was married to Ed Arnold, and they made their home northwest of Lone Grove in the Blue Ribbon area, where Ed farmed until his death in 1961.
They had one daughter Aline Harrell. Aline had two son, Gary and Larry. Gary is married to Olga Ibarra from Lone Grove. Larry is married to Dee Wallace from Ardmore.
After Ed's death. Ora moved to Ardmore, where she continues to make her home. Aline lives with her mother.
Maggie was married to Walter Bromley, and they had five children. (More details in Bromley family story.)
Claude married Blondie Spears. They made their home in Lone Grove, where they raised three children.
Dewey married Olive Gault. They made their home at Lone Grove and later at Hearldton. They had two son Marshall and James.
Roy married Clara Martin. They lived in Lone Grove many years before moving to California. Their had three sons Gerald, John Roy and Jimmie, and one daughter, Mary Jane.
While living in Lone Grove, Claude Dewey and Roy all worked in the oil fields and for the railroad.
Johnny and Willie died at early ages and an unnamed son died at birth.
Huey was killed when he was 18.
