'THENA' PERRY, HERALD SOCIETY EDITOR IN '50S
Bethena Townley Perry, who was The Miami Herald's society editor from 1951 to 1954, died Saturday in her daughter's Arizona home. She was 88.
Mrs. Perry -- who used the name Thena -- not only covered society; she was involved in it. When it came time to hire a new society editor, Herald editors decided they wanted someone who was a socialite. They asked Mrs. Perry, who had no newspaper experience.
"Her husband Larry's idea of relaxation was to row out to Biscayne Bay, anchor and fish. But Thena loved society," said friend Marie Anderson.
An outgoing, friendly woman, Mrs. Perry would rush from party to party, phoning articles in to editors.
In 1954, she became a columnist. She worked for The Herald for about another year.
Mrs. Perry and her family were among Miami's pioneers. She was born here in 1900. Her father, pharmacist John Madison Townley, was one of 502 people who voted to make Miami a city on July 28, 1896. He built the first skyscraper, the Townley Building, on Flagler Street. It is still there.
During World War I, Mrs. Perry headed up 15,000 volunteers, most of them women, who worked at the servicemen's pier in Miami Beach, a recreation center for men serving in the war.
"She was a bubbler," said friend Kay Pancoast. "She was bright, warm and friendly."
Mrs. Perry died in Prescott, Ariz., where she had gone 14 years ago to be near her daughter Linda Cheek. In addition to Cheek, she is survived by daughter Amanda Donalds of Massachusetts and sister Rosemarie Smathers of Vero Beach, nine grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
Memorial services will be held in Arizona and at 11 a.m. Friday in Woodlawn Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Bascom-Palmer Eye Institute.

Funeral of Mr. Perkins.
The large concourse of friends and acquaintances which assembled at the Methodist Episcopal Church, on Monday, to pay their last tribute of respect to the memory of John Perkins, attested the esteem in which he was held in this community. The hour of the funeral services had been fixed at 2 o'clock, but before that hour every available seat in the church was occupied. At half past two o'clock, the remains were borne into the edifice by Samuel J. Keyes, Dr. Thomas A. Worrell, John W. Anthony, Jacob Rambo, George McQuilkin, William A.
Wright, Henry M. Warner and Henry Evans, followed by the immediate family of the deceased, and a large representation of Union Lodge No. 48 A. F. and A. M., of which Mr. Perkins had been an active and influential member. The services were opened with a hymn announced by the Rev. Charles Hill, pastor of the church, after which the Scripture lesson was read by the Rev. I. G. Fosnocht, pastor of the Chesapeake City M. E. Church. Rev. Charles Hill delivered the forcible address upon the life and character of the deceased, after which the Rev. J. P. Otis, now of Bridgeville, Del., but recently a pastor of the Elkton church, paid an eloquent and touching tribute to the memory of his late brother and friend. Both addresses were marked by feeling and power, and during their delivery, many tearful eyes in the audience indicated the impressiveness of the service. After the service an opportunity was given the audience to view the familiar features of the deceased, after which the funeral cortege passed from the church to the Elkton Cemetery where the remains were deposited in their final earthly resting place. A number of handsome floral emblems were displayed as tributes of the Masonic order and others, and a number of business places on Main street were closed as the funeral cortege passed to the church, the attendance there being among the largest ever witnessed on a similar occasion. He was baptized on 30 June 1838 in Asbury Methodist Episcopal Church, Wilmington, New Castle Co., Delaware.6

"Archie Hatchet at Rest"
So said the blackboard in the Southern Methodist church on last Tuesday afternoon. Our friend and neighbor died on Christmas day at 4:00 in the afternoon. Mr. Hatchett had been in poor health for some time, but the immediate cause of his death was pneumonia.
Mr. Hatchett was born in Barren Co., Kenutcky June 30th 1830, but for many years had made his home in St. Charles and Chariton Counties, and for the last 21 years had lived in the suburbs of New Florence. He was an upright , true citizen, a man of noble impulses, generous and warm hearted at all times and in all places. He was a friend indeed when a neighbor came to him in distress; no one went away empty handed. Mr. Hatchett had been a member of the Southern Methodist church some 15 years, was a regular attendant upon the services of the sanctuary and a free and cheerful contributor to the institutions and needs of the church. Mr. Hatchett had very decided convictions in favor of a christian education for his children, and was exerting his best energies to accomplish that end. He leaves a widow and five children, three daughters and two sons, the youngest near 12 years of age.
The funeral at the church was conducted by Rev W. W. Carhart, his pastor. The very large attendance at the services attested the good name and standing of our departed friend among his neighbors in this community.
On Wednesday evening at the church conference, Rev. W. W. Carhart, pastor, presiding, the following paper was read and unanimously adopted by a rising vote.
Whereas, death has removed from our midst and membership, Brother Archie Hatchett, who for many years has been one of our faithful, consistent and stand-by members, ever ready and ever willing to bear his full share of the duties and responsibilities of a christian man. Therefore
Resolved: -- That we submit to this bereavement and loss as a church, with this text upon our lips and in our hearts, "We know that all things work together for good to them that love God."
Resolved: -- That we most affectionately and tenderly convey to Sister Hatchett and the dear children, our sincere sympathy and prayers for God's grace to be with them, keep them, guide and protect them ever in this life and bring them to meet the loved and lost.
"Safe on the Evergreen Shore."
