Kathleen Mackall Perkins1,2,3,4,5
F, #23186, b. 12 August 1894, d. May 1984
Parents
BASIC FACTS
Kathleen Mackall Perkins was born on 12 August 1894 in Washington Co., District of Columbia.6,7 She and Douglas Bunting Horne were married on 27 May 1919 in Washington, District of Columbia.4,1 She died in May 1984, at age 89.7 She was buried in Ivy Hill Cemetery, Alexandria, Alexandria City Co., Virginia.8 Kathleen Mackall Perkins was also known as Kathleen Ann Perkins.6,3 She had reference number 23460. Her Social Security Number was 226-44-7334, issued: Virginia, last residence, Alexandria, Alexandria City Co., Virginia.7 She was enumerated on the census in District of Columbia (1900, 1920, 1930.) The following letter is believed to have been written between 1938 and 1944. In it Kathleen is referring to her mother's side (Smith side) of the family. When Kathleen says she does not know her grandparents' names, she is referring to her mother's parents. Further on in the letter Kathleen writes that her mother has just told her that her grandmother Smith's maiden name was Rush. From this Kathleen surmised that she was a descendant of Dr. Benjamin Rush. It is clear from the letter that Kathleen was not able to actually make a connection to the children of Dr. Benjamin Rush and we now know that her grandmother's maiden name was Johnson and not Rush. This almost certainly means that Kathleen was not a descendant of Dr. Benjamin Rush, signer of the Declaration of Independence.
Hank Pierce reported that Kathleen's aunt, Mary Strickland "May" (Smith) Pierce, the person to whom Kathleen was writing, told her grandchildren that they were descendants of Dr. Benjamin Rush. It now looks like the source of Kathleen's and May's belief that they were descendant's Dr. Benjamin Rush comes from the fact that Kathleen's great-grandfather, John Lauterback Smith was at one time involved in a number of business dealings with a certain Benjamin H. Rush. In addition to being a business partner, there is strong circumstantial evidence to suggest that this Benjamin H. Smith was married to John's sister, Sarah P. Smith. For a time the families of John Lauterback Smith and Benjamin H. Rush lived next door to each other. At the present time there is no known connection between Benjamin H. Rush, business partner of John Lauterback Smith and Dr. Benjamin Rush, signer of the Declaration of Independence.
Tuesday
Dear Aunt May,
I have been intending to write to you ever since Mamma came home, but I couldn't get all of the information I wanted to send you to give to Edgar. Such funny things happen. The day before Mamma came home from visiting you, I was standing in front of Bunting's secretary looking at a copy of "The Declaration of Independence" and I said "Bunting, can you imagine anything more wonderful than having an ancestor who had signed the "Declaration of Independence?" I think that would be about the finest thing I know, an American could be so proud of that? He agreed that there couldn't be anything finer, but both of us sighed and I laughingly said, "Well, maybe I am descended from Jas. Smith who signed it. I knew that couldn't be, for I would have heard of it long ago. Then, when Mamma came home the very next day and said, "Did you know your ancestor signed the "Declaration of Independence?" Well, I couldn't believe my ears. Immediately I went to the Congressional Library and spent hours going through genealogical records, reading histories and diaries, but I reached a snag because I didn't know Grandmother or Grandfather Smith's names. Then, when Mamma called me and told me her name was Rush, the missing link was found. I made three trips to the Library (of Congress) and spent hours going over Dr. Rush's own writings. He was a wonderful person, altho' I was shocked when I found in my own library (right at home) so much about him. An Englishman by the name of Colbett accused him of having killed George Washington with a new bleeding process. Of course Dr. Rush proved his innocence, the Englishman was fined for libel and sent home. Dr. Rush was a great Democratic-Republican and very dear friend of Thomas Jefferson's. When John Adams and Thomas Jefferson still refused to speak to each other after years had gone by, Dr. Rush, who loved them both, connived and brought them together again and they were friends everafter. I have some pictures of the beautiful home "Morview" (?) in Princeton, New Jersey, where Dr. Rush was married to lovely Julia Stockton in 1776. Julia Stockton was the daughter of Richard Stockton IV., another signer of the Declaration. So you see I found that not only did we have one ancestor, but two who signed the Declaration. That is almost too good to be true, but there it is. Dr. Rush and Julia Stockton had thirteen children and I have chosen Samuel, although that may be the wrong one. I went over them carefully and since I did not know your grandmother's father's name, I couldn't do any better. You see, after reading the lives of each and who they married, it's not giving the names of all of their children. I may have guessed at the wrong one. If Edgar knows anything further about any of the names of other members of his family or all on the Smith side, I'd love to look them up. I'll still try to find the name of Grandmother Smith's father, to make sure that I am right.
I've drawn up, for Edgar, this chart tell him, I'd love to finish it all out, if he would help me a little on the names of some of the near ancestors. The ones further back can be easily found.
This has all been just loads of fun, and I don't want to give it up until I've found everything there is to be found. You know, a person prefers that his ancestors should be somebodies rather than nobodies even tho' they can occupy but the small amount of land in the end. No one should really think lightly of being well-born, I think it is quite as fine and important as being well-bred. Dr. Rush wrote several good books. They are in the historical and genealogical collections at the Library, "A Memorial Containing Travels Through Life or Sundry Incidents in the Life of Dr. Benjamin Rush" is the title of one. Isn't that a quaint title?
I am sending the chart. Tell Edgar I did it roughly. I know he could make a much better one. You see, each ancestor put down, is a direct ancestor, and it is so easily read, it is really just a sample tho'.
I hope you have been well, I am so busy all of the time, that I don't get to do half of the things I want to do. Patty is busy again in college and ran the college book shop for two weeks which she enjoyed very much. Give my love to everybody and keep lots for yourself.
Kathleen
