Mr. Duncan died Wednesday, September 12, 2001, in the Providence Hospital. Born in Elkton, Md. he was the son of the late David Smiley Duncan and Selena Estelle Perkins Duncan. He grew up in Narberth, Pa., attended the Narberth public schools. Catawba College and was a graduate of the University of North Carolina of Chapel Hill. A veteran of World War II, he served in the 2nd Calvary Reconnaissance Group in the European Theatre. Mr. Duncan retired from the "State Newspaper," where he was National Advertising Manager. He held the same position with "The News and Observer" of Raleigh, N.C. He had served as President of Babcock Center Board, The Advertising Clubs of both Columbia and Raleigh. He also served as president of the Newspaper Advertising Executives Association of the Carolinas, and was a Master Gardener and an active member of Columbia Green. He was a founding member of St. Andrew's Society of Columbia and was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church.
He was married to the former Lula McCraw Gay of Warrenton, N.C. who survives him. Also surviving are daughters, Mary Reynolds Duncan of the home, Elizabeth holt Duncan Powers (Mrs. Paul) of Columbia, McCraw Duncan Cromwell (Mrs. William) of Texas; granddaughters, Lockey Powers, Kate and Sarah Cromwell; and sister, Mrs. Charles (Jean Duncan) Rendleman of Columbia.
