A unique situation arose in the awarding of honors to top man in the graduating class of the Machinery Repair School, at the U.S. Navy Service School Command, San Diego. Two men completed the course with almost identical grades.
Joseph D. Avila, MRFA, and Haskiel J. Teague, MRFA, were the students in question. Avila completed the course with a final grade of 92.5116, while Teague closed his days at NTC with a 92.5118. With the final grades so close, it was decided that both men should be honor students from their class.
Avila is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Tony S. Avila of Lompoc. He entered the Navy service on Oct. 3, 1950 at Santa Barbara. Before entering the Machinery Repair School, Avila was stationed on the USS Jason (ARH-1). After graduation, he will return to his ship. Avila wears the Korean medal.
Joe's brother, John Avila, MR3, USN, now stationed in Korea, was honorman of his class in 1949.
Haskiel Teague hails from the other side of the country, Johnson City, Tenn. Jewell and Jack served several years as missionaries in Mexico.
