BASIC FACTS

Cecil Susan "Susan" Patterson was born on 13 April 1909 in Tennessee.1,2 She and John William Goodhew, Jr., were married on 16 June 1934 in Birmingham, Jefferson Co., Alabama.1 She died on 30 December 1997, at age 88, in Birmingham, Jefferson Co., Alabama.1 She died on 31 December 1997, at age 88, in Birmingham, Jefferson Co., Alabama.3
Cecil Susan "Susan" Patterson had reference number 13914. She resided in 4241 Woodvale Road S., Birmingham, AL 35222 (1990.)1 Her Social Security Number was 420-62-0753, issued Alabama.3 She was enumerated on the census in Jefferson County, Albama (1930.) She was a Teacher - public school (1930.)2 Willie Reeves Hardin Bivins wrote:

In 1982 Susan sent me a precious keepsake. From her 8 Feb 1982 letter: "I've intended to do this long before now, but as one of my peers said recently, 'I'm trying to get my possessions in dying condition' -- not that I am ill -- I am quite fat and sassy. But I came across one thing that I think should by yours. It's a New Testament and Psalms, which my Grandfather Patterson gave to his son Edward as a birthday gift in 1867 and is inscribed in his beautiful hand writing. You were closer kin to Edward than I and it should be yours. I only remember "Aunt Coco" by name and she lived so far away."
(Her grandfather was my dad's grandfather, N. A. Patterson. His two children by his first wife were my grandmother Cora "Coco" and Edward, who died very young. Her grandmother was my mother's aunt, second wife of NAP.)
The inscription: "Birthday Present / Edward Lucien Patterson / August 28 (1856) 1867 / In this Book you will find Wisdom, Beauty and Truth -- read it well / Your true Friend / N. A. Patterson." (He often signed letters to loved relatives this way.) The Bible was published in 1864. The 23rd Psalm is outlined in pencil. It was read at Edward's funeral from this Bible. The place is marked with a strip of very old fabric, printed in red and black. This is not a small Testament; it is the size of most modern complete Bibles, having rather large print. It is quite worn, but in fairly good condition.
Susan wrote in this letter: "I have such happy memories of Cousin Myra riding into Johnson City to see us -- nearly always on horseback -- and what a beautiful horsewoman she was! She had such beautiful brown eyes and always smiling. She was a pretty lady."
My mother, Myra, often told me that Susan was the most beautiful child she had ever known.
Susan had a knee joint replacement in April 1989 and recovered well. She wrote that as soon as the doctor said she could drive, "The first thing I did was drive to the beauty parlor!"
Susan moved in 1994 to an Episcopal Retirement Center in Birmingham, Alabama. She died suddenly 30 Dec 1997, only a few hours after a phone visit with Florence Smythe.
Susan wrote 9 Mar 1985 that Bill had bladder surgery for a malignant tumor in Nov 1982; a scan showed he had an aortic aneurysm on the verge of rupturing, so he had that surgery first. Six months after his recovery he began a terrible siege of shingles. They tried everything ever suggested, including acupuncture, but nothing helped the post-herpetic pain. They finally tried a TENS unit, which was a great help, but he could tolerate it only about two weeks, they would have to be without it awhile because his skin was so sensitive. She was thankful there was something other than Percodan that gave some relief.
Susan wrote in June 1987 that he had emphysema for several years and in October had an operation for prostate cancer; he recovered from that, and he had 20 radiation treatments. He still had the shingles pain, after four years, but was sweet and uncomplaining. When we visited them later in 1987 he was using the TENS unit as much as possible. He died the following January.
Susan's granddaughter and others from the church went on a Mission trip to Eastern Oklahoma, where they worked on houses for poor people. They slept in the church, on pews and floors. "They seem to get a big kick out of it each year." The young people of our church in Oklahoma City were making mission trips to work on houses in Appalachia; one year they were headquartered in Johnson City. I thought this was rather amusing. They may have crossed paths on the way to each other's areas. (In 1999 our Oklahoma City granddaughter went with a church youth group to Mexico.)
