The children and I have had a good time looking at it. It is so different now, or looks different, but the structure is the same. It was a one-story house, and later Father had it done over and the second story put on. The difference now is it has a banister around the porch, shutters at the windows, a brick foundation and shrubbery around it. I could see there was a gravel sidewalk and no paved street. There was a date on the sidewalk -- 1915. I would guess the picture was taken shortly after the second story was put on, so it was between 1912 and 1915."

Susan (Patterson) Goodhew wrote on May 16, 1982:

Our Pat was in Johnson City last week and spent three nights with Toodie Smythe, and came back with news of all of them. He said, "I know she's the sweetest, finest woman I know, besides you Mom." And she is -- she is so much like Aunt Bettie (her mother).

OBITUARY

Florence Smythe - JOHNSON CITY
Florence Browder Smythe, 102, of 2020 Sherwood Drive, Johnson City died Monday, November 26, 2007, at the Appalachian Christian Village.
Mrs. Smythe was a native and lifelong resident of Johnson City and a daughter of the late Samuel and Elizabeth Patterson Browder.
She was a very active member of the St. John?s Episcopal Church. Mrs. Smythe had also been as a member of the first Girl Scout Troop in Johnson City, served on the Board of Directors of the Girls Club, a twenty year volunteer as a Gray Lady for the Red Cross at the Veterans Hospital at Mountain Home, a volunteer for Meals on Wheels, and was recognized with a Tennessee Volunteer Award in the year of 2000.
She is preceded in death by: her parents; her husband, F.B. Smythe, in 1990; and a daughter, Bettie Andrews.
Mrs. Smythe is survived and will be greatly missed by: her daughter, Beverly Jackson, of Johnson City; six grandchildren, Susan Wilson and her husband, David, of Senatohia, MS, Ann Screnzel and her husband, Steven, of Snow Camp, NC, Senter Jackson and his wife, Marie, of Jonesborough, TN, Beverly Anders and her husband, Keith, of Johnson City, Carol Burleson and her husband, Gary, of Johnson City, and Robert Andrews, of Nashville, TN; eight great grandsons; and two great, great grandchildren also survive.
The funeral service for Florence Browder Smythe will be conducted at 1 PM Friday, November 30, 2007, in the St. John?s Episcopal Church. Father Hal Hutchison will officiate.
Interment will follow in the Monte Vista Memorial Park.
Active Pallbearers will be Keith Anders, Gary Burleson, Senter Jackson, Steven Screnzel, Chris Anders, Ben Anders, Elliott Anders and Robert Andrews.
Memorial gifts in memory of Mrs. Smythe may be sent to St. John?s Episcopal Church Building Fund, 500 North Roan Street, Johnson City, TN 37604
There will be no visitation.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt appreciation to all the caregivers at Appalachian Christian Village for their loving attention, care and concern for Mrs. Smythe.

He was a Baltimore native and had lived in Johnson City since 1921. Mr. Smythe was a son of the late William and Martha Young Smythe.
He was a member of St . John’s Episcopal Church, where he served as a member of the Vestry and House Committee.
Mr. Smythe was a pioneer in radio development in Johnson City. He was owner and operator of Smythe Electrical Co. for 35 years.
He was a World War I veteran, and served on the Draft Board during World War II.
Mr. Smythe was a member of the Rotary Club and the American legion.
