Dwight Mershon McGlohon, M.D., 53, of Oklahoma City, died June 17, 2010, after an 8-year battle with metastatic bladder cancer. Throughout this time, Dwight faced the many insults to his body with patience, courage and dignity, and continued to love and pursue life until the end. Dwight was born July 4, 1956 in Ulysses, Kansas, to Marion Mershon McGlohon and Charles Lee McGlohon. He attended public schools in Ulysses, graduating in 1974. He received his BA degree in Biology from Phillips University in Enid, OK in 1978, and his MD degree from the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine in 1981. He was Board Certified in Emergency Medicine by the American Osteopathic Association and was a member of the American Medical Association and the Oklahoma State Medical Association. He practiced as an Emergency Medicine Physician at Deaconess Hospital in Oklahoma City from 1982 until near the time of his death. In 1978, Dwight married Deborah Jo Bivins of Oklahoma City. Together they raised three children, Mary, Alan and Neil, who were the greatest source of inspiration, pride and joy in his life. Dwight was raised in the Disciples of Christ Church, transferring his membership to Grace United Methodist Church in Oklahoma City in 1977, where he was a member until 2006. At Grace Church, he was active in its music ministry through solos, choir, and bell choir. In addition he served on or chaired many committees, and in 1990 he represented the Oklahoma United Methodist Conference as a physician on a medical mission trip to Bolivia. Dwight joined the United Methodist Church of the Servant in Oklahoma City in 2006, where he was a member at the time of his death. Dwight sang tenor with the Canterbury Choral Society for many years. He was active in Boy Scouts of America, both as a child and with his sons, serving as Troop Physician and holding several other adult leadership positions. He loved spending time outdoors, studying astronomy and mathematics, and cooking for his family and friends. Bicycling, swimming, hiking, skiing, rappelling, hunting, and fishing were among his favorite activities, and he completed a sprint triathlon just one week before his cancer diagnosis in 2002. But of all his pursuits, his strongest passion was his music. He once said that even when he could not pray, he could sing, and he felt that was often his way of best expressing himself.Dwight was preceded in death by his father, Charles McGlohon. He is survived by his wife, Debbie, from whom he was separated, and his children: Mary McGlohon and her husband Austin McDonald of Pittsburgh, PA; Alan McGlohon of Kilauea, HI; and Neil McGlohon of Oklahoma City. Other survivors include his mother, Marion McGlohon of Ulysses, KS; brother, Bruce McGlohon and wife Crystal of Ulysses, KS; brother, Pat McGlohon and wife Debbie of Topeka, KS; brother, Scott McGlohon and wife Susan of LaVerne, CA; sister, Leslie McGlohon Berry of Arkadelphia, AR; and special friend, Xuan Hoa Pham of Oklahoma City. In addition he is survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins and the many friends he made over the years. The family wishes to give particular thanks to Dr. Aleda Toma and her staff at Cancer Specialists of Oklahoma, Dr. Teresa Shavney, Dr. Stephen Archer, Dr. James Wendelken, and the many other physicians and staff at Deaconess, Integris Baptist, and St. Anthony hospitals in Oklahoma City who have served Dwight the past 8 years. In addition, they thank Dr. Randall Millikan and the many other physicians and staff members at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas, who also were instrumental in helping Dwight live successfully with cancer for so long. The loving care of all these individuals has been remarkable and is very much appreciated.A memorial service will be held Tuesday, June 22, 2010, at 1:00 pm at The United Methodist Church of the Servant, 14343 N. MacArthur, Oklahoma City. Cremation will be followed by interment at a later date at Chapel Hill Cemetery in Oklahoma City and the Ulysses (KS) Cemetery. Mercifully, the clotting continued; he was successfully medicated to alleviate pain and was spared a lingering illness. He was a wonderful, loving brother.
