CORVALLIS, Ore. - A U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service employee and a contractor were killed when their small plane crashed in an Oregon forest.
The plane's wreckage was found Monday morning after it failed to arrive in Corvallis as scheduled on Sunday, said Benton County Sheriff Diana Benton.
Authorities identified the pilot as Vernon Ray Bentley, 52, a Fish and Wildlife Service employee from Blodgett. His passenger was David Sherwood Pitkin, 59, of Bandon, a former employee who was working as a contractor for the agency.
The two men were involved in the agency's annual midwinter count of migratory birds, said David Patte, an agency spokesman.
"You couldn't meet two finer people," he told the Gazette-Times newspaper. "They were really dedicated to the work they did. They loved the migratory bird program."
The plane, a single-engine Cessna registered to the U.S. Department of the Interior, departed from the coastal city of Newport at about 4 p.m. Sunday, Simpson said. The effort to find the missing aircraft began four hours later, with roughly 50 people assisting the sheriff's office.
A radio signal from the plane's locator beacon allowed searchers to narrow the crash site to an area near Philomath. Ground searchers located the wreckage at about 8:30 a.m.
"It's a heavily forested area, not easy to get to," said Mary King, emergency program manager for Benton County.
The Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board will try to determine the cause of the crash.

NEWSPAPER ARTICLE - Corvallis Gazette-Times (OR), Tuesday, January 19, 2010

Deceased Name: Vernon "Ray" Bentley, and David Pitkin: Crash victims were skilled at complex wildlife jobs
The two men who died Sunday in a plane crash were talented at the difficult, specialized job of monitoring wildlife, colleagues said Tuesday.
Vernon "Ray" Bentley, 52, and David Pitkin, 49, were en route from Newport to Corvallis Sunday afternoon when their plane went down in the Woods Creek drainage area west of Philomath. The cause of the crash is under investigation.
The two were returning to Corvallis after a day of surveying waterfowl in Oregon and Washington for the Department of the Interior Fish and Wildlife Service. Bentley was piloting the plane, a Cessna fixed-wing single engine.
James Voelzer, who retired in 2006 as chief of migratory bird surveys for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, hired Bentley as a pilot-biologist in the late 90s.
"It's a unique position," Voelzer said. "There are only 12 of them in the lower 48 states. There are half a dozen up in Alaska."
To count the birds, pilots fly slow and low, often only 150 to 300 feet off the ground.
Voelzer said the difficult part of a pilot biologist's job is not in any one task - flying, navigating, observing - but in doing all those things simultaneously.
"Ray adapted to that in as short an amount of time as anyone I ever hired," he said.
Due to treaty agreements, U.S. pilot-biologists also monitor bird populations in Canada and Mexico.
Bentley, who lived in Blodgett, flew year-round for the government. He owned his own plane and performed annual surveys in Canada. He'd recently flown above Chesapeake Bay and was scheduled to fly to the Arctic to complete surveys there.
Roy Lowe, the project leader for Oregon Coast National Wildlife Refuge Complex, said Sunday's flight started off like many others: Pitkin and Bentley left Corvallis at about 10 a.m. and flew over the refuge complex. Shortly before noon, they reported they were in Olympia, Wash., and would be heading west to Grays Harbor National Wildlife Refuge near the Pacific Coast.
Lowe said they stopped in Newport to refuel.
Just before 4 p.m., Pitkin called his girlfriend to say they were getting ready to head back to Corvallis. When no one had heard from them by 8 p.m., calls went out to Benton County Search and Rescue.
Jim Wortham, the chief of migratory bird surveys and Bentley's direct supervisor, said the plane was equipped with emergency beacons, including one designed to go off in the event of a "significant impact."
A REACH helicopter picked up a signal from that beacon in the early morning hours Monday. Two Benton County Sheriff's deputies on ATVs located the crash site about 7:30 a.m.
Mike Fergus, spokesman for the Federal Aviation Administration, said Tuesday that the National Transportation Safety Board is in charge of the investigation. It typically takes 10 days to two weeks for the initial report a crash investigation to be compiled and released, he said. NSTB officials did not return calls Tuesday seeking further information.
Until Sunday, the 54-year history of the migratory bird survey was unspoiled by a fatal crash, although several lesser crashes had occurred.
Co-workers on Tuesday said they had no reservations about Bentley's skills as a pilot.
Wortham called him a "premiere natural aviator" who the agency was grooming to start flying larger aircraft; Lowe said "he was the best pilot in the world."
"We're all just shocked over what happened," Voelzer said. "It just baffles us."
Pitkin first volunteered for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in 1992, Lowe said. Impressed by his capability, the agency eventually hired him as a permanent biologist.
Pitkin left the agency in 2007, but he still performed surveys on a contract basis, which was why he and Bentley were working together Sunday. He was an accomplished photographer, and his images often appeared in agency publications. He also was a woodworker who appreciated antiques.
But first and foremost, Lowe said, Pitkin was "a great conservationist."
Neither man was married, but both had long-term girlfriends.
Bentley, an avid outdoorsman, also enjoyed scuba diving, skydiving and travel.
"We're all better for having known him," Voelzer said. "The services and resources are better for him being part of it.
"He was our friend, and we'll miss him."
