Clark, Norman Virgil, 87, died on June 15, 2016, in Plano, Texas. Norman was born on June 26, 1928, in Big Springs, Texas to Virgil and Edith Clark. The family lived in Gail, Texas until 1936 when his father joined the U.S. Border Patrol. After training in El Paso, Texas, his father was transferred to numerous post along the Rio Grande Valley. During World War II, the family transferred to Kingsville, Texas. Norman completed his public school formal education in Kingsville, graduating in 1946. While in H.M. King High School, he was active in both football and basketball, earning recognition and All South Texas honors in both. He was captain of the football and basketball teams and president of his senior class. He enrolled in Texas A & I University, now Texas A & M University at Kingsville, with a basketball scholarship. He lettered each of his four years, something of a rarity in those days. He was also co- captain during his senior year. He worked at carious after- school and summer jobs while earning his Business Administration degree, graduating in 1950. Two of his summer jobs were the Celanese Chemical Company in Bishop, Texas, which became his lifetime employer on June 1, 1950. 1950 was a key year: He graduated from college, married, and began his 35- year career with Celanese Chemical Company. Starting in the yard gang, a normal practice in those days, he progressed through a number of positions including clerk, statistician, administrative assistant and cost accountant, all at the Bishop plant. in 1986, he joined the Celanese Chemical Company Traffic Department, located in Corpus Christi, Texas. Following several moves between Corpus Christi and Houston, he was relocated to the Celanese headquarters in Dallas in 1978 as Manager of Tank Car Operations. Norman retired in 1985 with 35 years of service with the same company, something very rare in this age. He was very active in sports throughout his working days. Following his graduations and college basketball, he played club basketball for five years on one of the better teams in South Texas. He also officiated high school and college football games for 34 years and college and high school basketball games for 17 years. He was a Division 1 official in both. He also worked in various capacities on the sidelines of Houston Oiler games. He was a faithful fan of the Houston Oilers, Astros and Rockets while in Houston and became a follower of the Cowboys, Mavericks, and Rangers upon his move to Dallas. After formal retirement from Celanese in 1985, he spent an additional two years as consultant to the company, they he enjoyed deep- sea fishing for sailfish and marlin, making a number of trips to the Pacific coast to Mexico. Retirement was also a time for worldwide travel, during which he collected several hundred souvenir patches as a hobby. He became involved with woodworking and gardening. He worked extensively with both business retiree and high school alumni groups organizing luncheons and reunion activities. He and his wife were long- time members of a bridge group composed of friends in Richardson, Plano, and Garland. He and his wife, Audrey, move to Highland Springs retirement community in May 2014. He is predeceased bu his parents, Virgil and Edith Clark, and his nephew, Tom Clark. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Audrey Powell Clark; son, Richard A. Clark of Fort Worth; daughters Terry Clark of Santa Fe, NM, and Lee Anne Clark Griffin of Tulsa, Oklahoma; son-in-law Stephen Griffin of Tulsa, granddaughter Emma Griffin Wedel, a graduate of Oklahoma State University; grandson Samuel Griffin, a graduate student at Trinity Evangelical School. Also surviving are his brothers- and sister-in-law Weldon B. and Dorothy Kenyon Clark, and niece Jean Ann Clark of Burnet, Texas. Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, June 23, 2016 at 12 PM in the Abbey Chapel at Restland Funeral Home. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted into Restland Funeral Home and Memorial Park, 13005 Greenville Avenue, Dallas, Texas 75243.
