Chinowth
Leland Edmind Chinowth, 72, a 17-year resident of 720 School St., Carrollton, died at 6:40 a.m. Saturday at the John Cochran Veteran's Hospital after an extended illness.
He was born Sept. 30, 1897 in Greenfield, the son of the late Joseph and Margaret Chinowth and spent most of his life in Carrollton. He married the former Bernice Carter May 8, 1922. A retired grocer, Chinowth was a member of the First Baptist Church, American Legion Post No. 114 and was a Master Mason in Lodge No. 50. He was a member of the WW I medical corps.
He is survived by his wife, two sons, Robert of Bethalto and Richard of Greenfield; two sisters, Mrs. W. P. Hayes of Peoria and Mrs. Richard Taylor, St. Louis; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Three brothers preceded him in death.
Visitation will be after 2 p.m. at Hires Funeral Home in Carrollton. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, with the Rev. J. R. Heike of the First Baptist Church, officiating. Masonic rites will be held at 8 p.m. today. Burial will be in the Carrollton City Cemetery.

ATLANTA (PNS) - Bernice Chinowth, 86, of Atlanta, associated in the Carrollton grocery business as a clerk for 50 years, died at 8:17 a.m. yesterday (July 19, 1983) at the Christian Nursing Home, Lincoln.
Her funeral will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Airsman-Hires Funeral Home, Carrollton, the Rev. Don Galehr and the Rev. Marshall Werry officiating. Burial will be in Carrollton City Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Fricke-Calvert-Schrader Funeral Home, Lincoln, had charge of local arrangements.
Mrs. Chinowth was born July 2, 1897, at Wrights, a daughter of Calvin and Henrietta Cunningham Carter. She married Leland Chinowth May 8, 1922 at Carrollton. He died July 4, 1970.
Surviving are two sons, Robert, Atlanta, and Richard, Greenfield; a brother, Howard Carter, Carrollton, four grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.
Two brothers and a sister preceded her in death.
Mrs. Chinowth was a member of the First Baptist Church of Carrollton, a 50-year member of the Order of the Eastern Star, and a member of the American Legion Auxiliary.
Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church of Lincoln or to the Christian Nursing Home.

Robert Chinowth
EL PASO — Robert E. Chinowth, 89, of El Paso, died at 2:23 p.m. Thursday (Oct. 23, 2014) at OSF St. Joseph Medical Center in Bloomington.
He was born on July 1, 1925, in Carrollton, a son of the late Leland and Bernice Carter Chinowth. He married Clara V. Wilson in Carrollton on Sept. 5, 1947, and she survives.
Also surviving are a daughter, Linda (Robert) Kidd, El Paso; a son, David (Susan) Chinowth, Atlanta; four grandchildren, Richard (Sue Ann) Kidd, Jennifer (Kelly) Murrah, Nicholas (Bridget) Chinowth, Ashley (Curt) Alexander; seven great-grandsons; a sister-in-law, Betty Chinowth; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Dick Chinowth.
Robert served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II. He fought in Southeast Asia, earning three battle stars and the Southeast Asia Command Medal. He worked in sales for Noll’s Bread, Mrs. Allison’s Cookies and Woodhouse Merchandising Food Brokerage. After retirement, he worked for three funeral homes and worked security for DuPont in El Paso. He was a member of the Northbridge Baptist Church, American Legion, Amvets and a lifelong member of Stewart Pearson Masonic Lodge in Carrollton.
Memorials may be given to Northbridge Baptist Church, Normal, or the El Paso Rescue Squad.
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Northbridge Baptist Church, Normal, with visitation one hour prior to the service at the church. The Revs. Jan Hazecamp and Michael Sloan will officiate. Masonic rites will be presented. Cremation has been accorded and inurnment will be at a later date in Godfrey, where military rites will be presented. Arrangements are entrusted to Ruestman- Harris Funeral Home, El Paso. CARROLLTON - Sgt. Richard Chinowth has received his discharge from the armed forces and he and his wife returned here last week from Fort Hood, Tex., where he had been stationed. Sgt. Betty Batty Of Greenfield Weds Carrollton Man
Carrollton -- Miss Betty Batty, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Batty of Greenfield, and Richard Chinowth, son of Mr. and Mrs. Leland Chinowth of this city were married Saturday, Sept. 9 at 7 p.m. by the Rev. Laurel Grigg, paster of the local Baptist church.
The ceremony took place at the Baptist church parsonage and the couple were attended by Miss Barbara Thiebaud of Greenfield and Robert Chinowth of this city, the brother of the groom.
After a short wedding trip Mr. and Mrs. Chinowth are making their home with the groom's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Leland Chinowth.
Mrs. Chinowth is a graduate of Greenfield Community High School class of 1947 and Chinowth is a 1947 graduate of the Carrollton High School. Mrs. Chinowth is employed by Sears Roebuck and Company here while Chinowth is an employee of the Preston-Roads Pontiac Sales Company here.
