Martha Bachman Fain Erwin, 80, passed away at NHC Health Care Center in Johnson City, TN on Thursday, December 14, 2006. She was born in Sullivan County, Tenn. on March 1, 1926 to the late Joseph and Gladys Fain.
She was a graduate of East Tennessee State University and was an elementary school teacher and substitute teacher in Tennessee and Virginia for many years. Mrs. Erwin was instrumental in the founding of a nursery school at St. Paul United Methodist Church in Christiansburg, Va. and taught there for several years. She was an accomplished storyteller and entertained many with stories of old and original ones as well.
Throughout her life Mrs. Erwin was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and friend. Her generous and kind spirit touched many. She was a member of Windsor Avenue Presbyterian Church in Bristol, TN. Mrs. Erwin enjoyed competing in the Senior Olympics and was an advocate of wellness and joyful living.
Her husband of 49 years, Joseph Ralph Erwin, Jr. and a daughter, Sandra Erwin Dick, precedes her in death.
A daughter Rebecca Steele and husband Greg Steele of Fernandina Beach, Fla., a daughter Mary Hughes and husband Cliff of Christiansburg, Va., a son Joe Erwin and wife Becky of Johnson City, Tenn. and a son-in-law, Jeff Dick of Charlottesville, Va., survive Mrs. Erwin. Her grandchildren Ashley Strand and husband Steve of Lawrence, Kan., Joshua Dick of Charlottesville, Va., Michael and Sarah Erwin of Johnson City, Tenn. also survive her. A brother-in-law, Curtis Erwin of Ocala, Fla. and nephews David and Danny Erwin of Columbia, S.C. also survive her.
Mrs. Erwin also leaves to cherish her memory many loving friends. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. at Weaver Funeral Home in Bristol, Tenn. on Saturday, December 16, 2006. The funeral service will follow immediately after the visitation. Graveside services will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Sunday, December 17, 2006 at the Fain Family Cemetery in Kingsport, Tenn. Mr. Erwin, 70, of 302 Honeysuckle Lane, Bristol, Tenn., died Tuesday, April 24, 2001, in Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. He was a Bristol native and a son of the late Joseph R. Erwin Sr. and Della Mae (Hice) Erwin.
Mr. Erwin enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in the spring of 1951 and was commissioned a second lieutenant. He served as a naval gunfire spotter for the battleship USS Missouri during the Korean conflict, achieving the rank of captain. Following his military service, he began a career in public education. He was a teacher, coach and administrator in both Tennessee and Virginia school systems. Throughout his career, he was recognized often for his commitment to public education. Mr. Erwin retired from Bristol Tennessee city schools in 1990. He was a member of Windsor Avenue Presbyterian Church, the Bristol Evening Lions Club and the Masonic Lodge.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Martha (Fain) Erwin; three daughters and sons-in-law, Rebecca and Greg Steele of St. Augustine, Fla.; Mary and Cliff Hughes of Christiansburg, Va.; and Sandra and Jeff Dick of Charlottesville, Va.; a son and daughter-in-law, Joe and Becky Erwin of Johnson City; a brother, Curtis Erwin of Ocala, Fla.; grandchildren Mary Ashley Hughes, Joshua Dick, Michael Erwin and Sarah Erwin; and nephews David Erwin and Daniel Erwin of Columbia, SC. KINGSPORT - Evelyn Fain Hicks Laughlin passed away Thursday December 6, 2001). She was a lifelong resident of the Arcadia community and a member of Reedy Creek Presbyterian Church. Mrs. Laughlin taught Home Economics at Ketron High School and Sullivan North High School for many years.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Henry Laughlin Jr. whom she married on 18 March 1955; and her parents, Wesley Fain and Laura Evelyn (Brown)Hicks.
Survivors include a daughter, Mary Evelyn (Laughlin) Clonce and husband Jimmy, of Nashville; two sons, William Brown Laughlin, Church Hill, and Thomas Fain Laughlin, Radford, Va.; two grandsons, Zackery Garret Clonce and Matthew Tyler Clonce; one brother, Lynn Wesley Hicks, Kingsport; one niece, Jennifer Lynn Fain; and two nephews, Wesley Andrew Hicks and Michael Scott Hicks.
Calling hours are from 6 to 9 p.m. today at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home, downtown, or any time at the home of Ezra and Mary Ann Laughlin, 4200 Bloomingdale Road. Services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Larry Stallard and the Rev. Guy Tilley officiating. Burial will follow in the Fain Family Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Charles Newland, Ernie Williams, Harold Robertson, Bill Britton, Fred Calhoun, Paul Hauk, Joe Laughlin and Ezra Laughlin.
