Mary Harriet (Bixler) Naughton, daughter of Mary (Thayer) and Julius Seelye Bixler, was born on July 11, 1921 in Beirut, Syria (later Lebanon), where Dr. Bixler was teaching at the American University.
The family returned to the U.S. in 1922, and her father later taught at Smith College and Harvard Divinity School. In 1942, he was made president of Colby College in Waterville, Maine. Harriet graduated with honors from Smith College in 1942, having majored in music and received her M.A. in English and Comparative Literature from Columbia University in 1944.
In July 1944 she was sent to Istanbul, Turkey, where she served as secretary to the War Refugee Board and the Office of War Information. Returning to the U.S. in 1946, she lived in New York City and was employed by Time magazine on the copy desk. In 1948 Harriet married Thomas John Naughton. Tom was an associate editor of True, the Man's Magazine and later on Argosy and Field & Stream. They had four children: twins Katherine Seelye and Michael James, George Berry and Alexander Thayer. In 1955 they moved to Old Saybrook, Connecticut, where Tom died in 1959.
After her husband's death, Mrs. Naughton was a music teacher in the elementary schools of Chester, Deep River, and Essex, Connecticut, retiring in 1981. She was active in Old Saybrook town affairs, serving on the Board of Education, Board of Finance, Planning Commission, and on two school building committees. She also served a term as president of the Old Saybrook Historical Society. In 1982, she ran unsuccessfully as a Democrat for the Connecticut House of Representatives.
During her retirement, Mrs. Naughton joined several Smith College tours of European countries, as well as to Greece and Egypt. She also visited Katherine who was living in England, and Alexander who was studying Buddhism in Japan. Mrs. Naughton moved to Applewood on March 17, 1998.
Mrs. Naughton was predeceased by a sister, Elizabeth Seelye Bixler, and is survived by two others: Martha Bixler of New York City, and Nancy (Bixler) Issacs with her husband Sandy of Jaffrey, NH. She is also survived by her children, Katherine of Amherst, Michael and his wife Judy of Millers Falls, George and his wife Cindy, and their sons, Thomas James and Jonathan Seelye of Pelham, and Alexander and his wife Kathleen, and their three daughters, Hannah Mary, Claire Suzanne, and Prajnya Elizabeth (Polly) of Madison, Wisconsin; also a nephew and three nieces and their families.
Burial will be with her husband in Cypress Cemetery, Old Saybrook, Connecticut. Swan Funeral Home has charge of arrangements, www.swanfuneralhomeoldsaybrook.com. Published in The Hartford Courant on September 27, 2011.
