BASIC FACTS

Catherine Utz was born on 21 December 1806 in Pennsylvania.5,2 She died on 13 October 1859, at age 52, in West Manheim Twp., York Co., Pennsylvania.6,5,1 She was buried in Saint Matthews Lutheran Church, Hanover, York Co., Pennsylvania.5
Catherine Utz had reference number 36834. She was enumerated on the census in York County, Pennsylvania (1850.) It appears that Samuel was married to two Catherines. The first Catherine is the one I believe to be Catherine Utz, daughter of Johann Adam Utz and Catherine Long. The first Catherine is shown in the 1850 Census. I believe that Catherine (Utz) Overdeer was the mother of all of Samuel's children. Two really helpful pieces of information are the death certificates of Abner U. Overdeer and Lewis Overdeer. They show that Abner and Lewis were the sons of Samuel Overdeer and Catherine Utz. On Abner's death certificate, the informant was Frank Overdeer, a grandson of Samuel and Catherine. Frank was a very successful businessman and I think he would have gotten this right. There is a record in the Saint Matthew Lutheran Church Record of Burials (1790-1865) that shows a Catherine Overdeer that was born 21 Dec 1806 and died 13 Oct 1859. I have thought that this was Samuel's first wife, Catherine (Utz) Overdeer, as no wife is shown living with Samuel's family in the 1860 Census. However, Samuel is again shown with a wife, Catherine, in the 1870 Census. There are at least two possibilities: 1) The Catherine Overdeer that died in 1859 was not Samuel's first wife and that she was inadvertantly ommitted from the 1860 Census. (Samuel is shown as married in the 1860 Census.) and 2) The Catherine that died in 1859 was Samuel's first wife and he subsequently remarried a second Catherine who appears in the 1870 Census. My genealogy is currently showing Samuel with two wives.
Michael Gulden's genealogy says that Catherine Utz was born on 22 Aug 1807. He also uses this date on the Find-A-Grave memorial for Catherine (Utz) Overdeer. This is close to the birth year of the Catherine shown in the 1870 Census. This may be the birth date for the second Catherine Overdeer if there were indeed two Catherines.

This amphibious force assaulted Fort Huger from the rear, quickly capturing its garrison, thus reopening the river to Union shipping. On April 24, Brig. Gen Michael Corcoran's Union division mounted a reconnaissance-in-force from Fort Dix against Maj. Gen. George E. Pickett's extreme right flank. The Federals approached cautiously and were easily repulsed. On April 29, Gen. Robert E. Lee directed Longstreet to disengage from Suffolk and rejoin the Army of Northern Virginia at Fredericksburg. By May 4, the last of Longstreet's command had crossed the Blackwater River en route to Richmond.

Fifty Years Ago
New Enterprise. -- Mr. Henry Overdeer, of this place, has had one of his lime kilns changed under the invention of J.W. Devling, of Flemington, Pa., to a wood burning under flame draw kiln, to burn wood or soft coal. It takes about one half as much wood as the old style wood kilns consumed. The lime is cleaner and said to be better for building purposes as well as land, than coal burned lime. Any kind of solid wood is used on the grate, and the inventor claims that the lime will be more evenly burned than by any other process.
