New Oxford Item:
Dr. Joseph Price, of Philadelphia, assisted by Dr. J. H. Bittinger, of Hanover, performed an operation Thursday night at 11 o'clock on Mrs. Clarissa Rittase, residing with Mr. and Mrs. Rufus Krug, at Midway, near Hanover, for general peritonitis and perforation of the bowels. Dr. A. C. Wentz, administered the ether. Other physicians present were Drs. H. M. Alleman, of Hanover; J. L. Sheetz, of this place, and A. C. Rice of McSherrystown.
The patient rallied from the operation and is doing as well as can be expected after so serious an operation. Miss I. A. Quinne, a trained nurse from Philadelphia, is in attendance. Since the above was in type we learn that Mrs. Rittase died on Saturday evening at 10 o'clock. Her age was 61 years and 6 days. Mrs. Rittase's maiden name was Kitzmiller. Years ago she was married to Enos Overdeer, with whom she resided in West Manheim township, York county. About 21 years ago her husband and three children died within a few weeks of typhoid fever. Later she moved to near Littlestown and was married to Mr. Rittase, who died about six years ago. A daughter from her first marriage died about a year ago of diphtheria, at the home of William A. Sell, in Union township. For some years deceased had been keeping house for George Krug, in Midway, who died a few months ago. Since then she made her home with Rufus Krug's family, contemplating erecting a house for her own use.
OBITUARY - The York Daily (York, PA), Tuesday, June 27, 1899, Page 1
Death of Mrs Clarissa Rittase
Mrs. Clarissa Rittase, of Hanover, died Saturday night at 10 o'clock from general peritonitis and perforation of the bowels, aged 61 years and 6 days, after undergoing an operation on Thursday night last, which was preformed by Dr. Joseph Price, of Philadelphia, assisted by Dr. J. H. Bittinger, Carlisle street, Hanover. The patient rallied after the operation, but owing to the great shock attending the operation, together with her advanced age and weakened condition, she gradually became weaker until death occurred.
Mrs. Rattase's maiden name was Miss Kitzmiller, and she was twice married, her first husband having been Enos Overdeer, of West Manheim township, who died twenty-one years ago. Several years after she was united in marriage to her second husband, who died 6 years ago at their home in Union township, Adams county. After the death of her late husband Mrs. Rittase took up her sesidence at the home of the late George Krug, of Penn township, at the edge of Hanover. After Mr. Krug's death, several months ago, she moved to the home of Rufus Krug, in Hanover. Mrs Rittase was the mother of four children by her first husband, all of whom are dead. Two sisters survive her - Mrs. Jacob Reigle and Mrs Edward Shafer, of Conewago township, Adams county.
The funeral will take place at 9 o'clock this morning from the house. Services will be held in Trinity reformed church by Revs. Roth and Lindaman. Interment will be made in Mt. Olivet cemetery.
Note: The Mr. Rittase referred to in the above obituary was William Rittase. The George Levi Krug, mentioned in the above obituary, was married to Mary E. Karicoaf, sister of Charles F. Karicoaf. Charles' wife was Alice Elizabeth Overdeer. Alice was a niece of Enos Overdeer, first husband of Clarissa (Kitzmiller) Overdeer - Rittase.
