Lois Jean O'Dell Weinhold, age 93, a life long resident of Carrollton, Missouri, passed away on Friday, May 16, 2014 at Carroll House in Carrollton.
Lois Jean was born on November 9, 1920 in rural Carroll County, the daughter of Ogle A. and Forest Munson O'Dell. She moved to Carrollton in 1924 when her father became Sheriff of Carroll County serving from 1924-1928 and 1932-1936. She always liked to say that at age 16, she had spent half of her life in jail! Lois Jean graduated from Carrollton High School and from Christian College, where she received her Associates Degree. She worked for several years for T.W.A. in Kansas City, Missouri. On June 30, 1943, she married George Weinhold of Carrollton, who preceded her in death on February 16, 1994. They moved to Oakland, California where George was stationed in the Navy. After the war, they returned to Carrollton to take over his father's business, Weinhold's Arcade. She and George operated Weinhold's for forty three years until they sold the business in 1992. Lois Jean was a life long member of the Carrollton First Christian Church. She was active in community affairs, the Carrollton Merchants Association, and the Democratic Party. Lois Jean was a Carrollton Womans Club charter member and she served on the Oak Hill Cemetery Board for many years. In her spare time, she loved to read, play cards, garden and travel; especially to New Orleans to visit her family.
Lois Jean was preceded in death by her parents, Ogle and Forest O'Dell; and husband, George Weinhold.
George and his wife owned and operated "Weinhold's", a variety store on the east side of the Carrollton, Missouri square for quite a number of years. A place where all children loved to go to the candy counter.
Thank you and your husband, George, for sharing your store with all of us, as we grew up. There are plenty more like me, that remembers the enticement of your candy counter at the checkout. What mother could resist buying her children a sack of sweet morsels before leaving. I remember you peering over your 'half' glasses as you handed over the sack of Brach's stars...my very favorite. You will be remembered by those of us who still can.
