Mrs. Phyllis Edwina Goebel, 62, of Midland, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 3, 2009, at her home. Mrs. Goebel was born June 12, 1946 in Morganton, a daughter of Carrie Scott Fox of Morganton and the late Earl Fox. She was a 1968 graduate of Western Carolina University and retired from Union County public schools after 36 years of service as an elementary and special education teacher. Edwina was very humble about her accomplishments. She received teacher of the year recognition on several occasions; however, after receiving her first award she subsequently asked that other teachers that she mentored receive the honor instead. Edwina was an active member of Blair Road UMC where she taught the This n' That Sunday school class, which the members of the class would have rather named after her. She will be remembered as a loving wife and mother who was very proud of her sons and their accomplishments. In addition to her mother, Mrs. Goebel is survived by her beloved husband of 35 years, Pete Goebel; their sons, Jason Andrew Goebel and his wife, Taryn, of Charleston, S.C. and Joshua Scott Goebel and his wife, Angela, of Graniteville, S.C.; a sister, Debra Fox-Helser and her husband, Steve, of Morganton; a brother, Dewey Fox and his wife, Martha, of Morganton; and by two precious grandchildren, Loralei Goebel and Cooper Goebel. A memorial service to celebrate Edwina's life will be held 3 p.m. Friday at Blair Road United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dr. Nelson B. Melvin officiating. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at McEwen - Mint Hill Chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to Blair Road UMC, Building Fund, 9135 Blair Road, Charlotte, NC 28227. Arrangements by McEwen - Mint Hill Chapel.
