James Weldon "Van" Van Osdol, 78, of Astoria, died Tuesday, Sept. 18, 2007, in Astoria.
He was born March 14, 1929, in Astoria, to James Ross and Anna Sophia (Jackson) Van Osdol.
He married Betty Anne Bureau. She survives, residing in Astoria.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army 88th Division in Italy and Yugoslavia during the Communist rebellion. He was also an overseas delegate to Taiwan, and received an audience with Madame Chiang Kai-shek.
Mr. Van Osdol was a 42-year retired longshoreman.
A member of the International Longshore and Warehouse Union Local No. 50, he initiated the widow's pension benefit at Coast Caucus for longshoreman widows. He was a 50-year member of Seaport Masonic Lodge No. 7.
Family members said he was a hunter and fisherman for more than 50 years in Clatsop County.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Don and Rhonda Van Osdol and Jim and Patti Van Osdol, all of Astoria; a daughter, H. Liane Van Osdol of Portland; a brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Rita Van Osdol of Astoria; six grandchildren, Matt and Joe Van Osdol and Jennifer and Chris Geisler, all of Astoria, Cassie Van Osdol of Ilwaco, Wash., and Dave Hazen of Clatskanie; two great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; and an aunt, Alice Lambert of Salem.
