THOMAS HARDY, CHAIRMAN OF SURGERY AT GRANT, DIES AT 61
Dr. Thomas G. Hardy, 61, a surgeon internationally recognized for his research, has died of an apparent heart attack.
Hardy, of Bexley, was chairman of the department of surgery at Grant Medical Center and president-elect of the Columbus Surgical Society. He also was an assistant professor at the Ohio State University School of Medicine.
Hardy died Monday in Grant.
"He was probably one of the best-liked doctors by his patients, and probably the most conscientious person I have ever seen," said Dr. William Stewart, Hardy's medical practice partner. "He was really industrious."
Hardy pioneered and developed medical devices, including the anastamotic ring, a biodegradable device that is used instead of sutures or surgical staples to connect sections of the bowel in operations that involve removing part of the bowel.
For that, he received the "award for excellence in research" from the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons Research Foundation this year.
His research has been published in medical journals.
Born Feb. 25, 1927, in Farmville, Va., Hardy received a bachelor's degree from the University of Virginia and, in 1950, a medical degree from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.
He served two years in the Navy, including service as a medical officer in a battalion aid station in South Korea during the Korean War. He had lived in Franklin County since 1972.
He is survived by his wife, Beverley McCahan Hardy; sons Thomas G. III, Richmond, Va., and David C. McCahan, Chicago; daughters Lindsay H. Mallison, Tallahassee, Fla., Whitney Salie, Atlanta, and Erin McCahan, Columbus; and four grandchildren.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 787 E. Broad St.
The Schoedinger Funeral Home, 229 E. State St., is handling arrangements.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Grant Hospital Development Foundation or the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons Research Foundation, 72 Sheldon Ave., Grand Rapids, Mich., 49506.
