Joe Shaum
Joseph Bernard Shaum, 86, of Westminster, MD, died peacefully on Wednesday, March 30, 2016 at Carroll Lutheran Village in Westminster. Born July 4, 1929 in Taneytown, he was the son of the late Francis and Helen (Wisotzkey) Shaum. He was the husband of Betty (Conaway) Shaum, to whom he was married for 63 years.
Joe was born and raised in Taneytown. At a very early age, he built and flew model airplanes, both free-flight and control line. At age 11, Joe's father had him clerk in his meat and grocery store on Main Street. At age 16, Joe received his flying license at Taneytown Airport, which was located at Fair's Garage on the Taneytown-Emmitsburg Road. He advanced to a private pilot's license, which enabled him to take passengers for rides. Throughout his lifetime, he enjoyed building and flying model airplanes.
Joe attended St. Joseph Catholic School for 8 years before entering Taneytown High School. He was elected class president during his sophomore and senior years, graduating in 1948. When President Harry Truman initiated the draft, Joe enlisted in the United States Air Force, and served for 3 years during the Korean War. Upon leaving the service, Joe returned to work at his father's store for 2 more years. He then took on a new challenge as a salesman for the Maryland Candy Company in Westminster, spending 13 years there. He subsequently landed a job as a customer service representative with the Westinghouse Corporation in Sykesville, eventually being promoted to Supervisor of Receiving, Storeroom, and Shipping. After 19 years with Westinghouse, Joe became the Shipping Supervisor for 7 years at the Aristocraft Company in Littlestown, PA. He then worked during semi-retirement for Star Vending in Westminster for 6 years.
After retiring, Joe and Betty volunteered in Carroll Community Hospital's gift shop and at the information desk for 22 years. Joe served for 6 years as treasurer of the hospital auxiliary, and served 2 terms as president. He also served as a member of Carroll Hospital's Board of Directors, the Taneytown City Council, and the Board of Directors of Cantonsville Community College in Carroll County. He was a member of both St. Joseph Catholic Church in Taneytown and St. John's Catholic Church in Westminster. He was a member of Hesson Snider American Legion Post 120 in Taneytown, where he served as Commander for one term. He was a former member of the Board of Directors of the Carroll County Heart Association.
Surviving in addition to his wife are son, Michael Shaum and wife Lorie of Fort Mill, SC; daughter, Becky Rugemer and husband Max of Oakton, VA; granddaughter, Melissa Shaum of NC; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by sister, Mary Donatelli and brothers, Father David W. Shaum, and Frank Shaum.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, April 4, 2016 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 44 Frederick St., Taneytown, MD, with Monsignor Martin E. Feild as celebrant. Interment will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery. The family will receive friends 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Sunday at MYERS-DURBORAW FUNERAL HOME, 136 E. Baltimore St., Taneytown, MD. Shaum -- Conway
WESTMINSTER -- At a nuptial mass in Saint John's church, Westminster, Thanksgiving morning Miss Betty Jane Conway (sic), daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Stephen Penn, Warfieldsburg, became the bride of Joseph Bernard Shaum, son of Mr. and Mrs. Francis E. Shaum, Taneytown. Rev. David W. Shaum, a member of the faculty of Mount Saint Mary's College, Emmitsburg, brother of the bridegroom performed the ceremony and was the celebrant of the nuptial mass. The altar was decorated with white and gold pompons, palms, ferns and lighted tapers.
The bride was given in marriage by her uncle, James F. Burke, Taneytown. The bride's attire was a fitted gown of Chantilly lace, long sleeves with train. The veil was of illusion falling from a juliet cap of Chantilly lace. Her flowers were white roses and stephanotis with detachable white orchid and robbon streamers.
The matron of honor, Mrs. Nick Donatelli, Hanover, sister of the bridegroom, wore blue net with lace and carried yellow daisy-like pompons. Miss Dorothy Kemper, Westminster, wearing peach net over taffeta and carrying orchid pompons, and Miss Alice Deardorff, Westminster, attired in Lavender net over taffeta and carrying yellow poms served as bridesmaids.
Frank Shaum, brother of the bridegroom, Taneytown, acted as best man. Nick Donatelli, Hanover, brother-in-law of the bridegroom, and Edward Sell, Taneytown, served as ushers. Georgia Elaine Easton, cousin of the bride was flower girl. She was gowned in light green net over taffeta, and carried a bouquet of mixed pompons. Walter Halter, Taneytown, was ring bearer.
Saint John's Church choir sang the music of the mass under the direction of F. Kale Mathias. Martin W. Diffendale, orgainst, presided at the console and presented a recital immediately preceding the ceremony. Mrs. Betty Mathias, soloist, sang. Timothy Dunn chanted the proper of the mass. Eugene Rickell, Frederick, and Ralph Close, Westminster, cousin of the bride, served the mass. The Rev. James Dwyer, pastor of St. John's church was present in the sanctuary.
Immediately following the ceremony, a reception was held at the Charles Carroll Hotel. Miss Conway is a graduate of the Westminster High school class of 1951, and is employed by the Ritchie Associates Loan and Insurance company, Westminster. Mr. Shaum, a graduate of the Taneytown High School class of 1948, served for three and a half years in the air forece and is an employe of his father's meat market. The couple left on a wedding trip to Williamsburg, Va., and points south. The bride's traveling costume was a maroon suit, a light blue coat with black accessories and an orchid corsage. Upon their return the newlyweds will reside in Taneytown.

Note: Frank Stephen Penn was Betty's step-father.

Janet Lee Conaway, 70, of Westminster
Born Oct. 22, 1934, in Frederick, she was the daughter of the late Helen Williams Wolbert and the niece of Woodrow Crunkilton of Reisterstown and the late Edna Crunkilton.
She was the wife of the late LeRoy L. Conaway, former mayor of Westminster.
She attended Oldfields Schools in Glencoe, and Vassar College, Poughkeepsie, N.Y.
She and her husband owned and operated the East End Market in Westminster and The Whistle Stop in Patapsco.
She is survived by daughter Teresa L. Conaway of Lubbock, Texas; brother-in-law and wife Jay and Ethel Conaway of Westminster; nephews Gary Conaway of Silver Spring, Bryan D. Myers of Manchester and Dr. Boyd D. Myers of Annandale, Va.; and niece Bonnie M. Lockard of Westminster.
In accordance with her wishes, there was no funeral service.
Arrangements were by Fletcher Funeral Home, Westminster.
