PEORIA - William "Bill" Edward Smothers, 90, of Peoria passed away Tuesday, May 26, 2015, at Bickford Cottage in Peoria.
He was born Nov. 20, 1924, to Thomas and Isabella (Watkins) Smothers in Royalton, Ill. He married Ileen Hayes on Feb. 10, 1950, in Peoria. She preceded him in death.
Also preceding him in death were his parents, his brother and his sister.
Surviving are his children, Nan (Ron) Macari of Peoria, Dan (Karen) Smothers of Morton and Tom (Cynthia) Smothers of Birmingham, Ala. Also surviving are his grandchildren, Margaret Macari, Shawn Smothers, Jennifer (James) Lam, Lilliane Smothers and Callie Smothers; and one great-grandson, Kyeler Smothers.
William served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He then graduated from Bradley University with a BS in general engineering. He worked at Caterpillar in facilities engineering for 30 years, retiring as a senior project engineer in 1987. He was a registered professional engineer.
He enjoyed sailing, knot tying, ballroom dancing and spending time with his family.
He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and the Scottish Rite. He enjoyed helping others and was a driver for the Shriner's Hospital van for many years.
Cremation rites have been accorded. A celebration of life event will be held at The Wilton Mortuary in Peoria on Saturday, May 30, 2015, from 10 to 11 a.m. Graveside services will follow at Swan Lake Memory Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Shriner's Hospitals for Children.

Lloyd K. Ingram, 80, of 5111 Prospect Road died at 8:20 a.m. Wednesday at St. Francis Medical Center.
Born June 29, 1904, in Lake Fork to John and Alta Buckles Ingram, he married Cecil E. Hayes Feb. 24, 1934, in Peoria. She died Feb. 26, 1981. One brother also preceded him.
Surviving are one son, Kenneth Ingram of Peoria; one daughter, Mrs. Carol Williams of Morton; and four grandchildren.
He was a tool and dye maker at Caterpillar Tractor Co., 41 years, retiring in 1970. He was a member of Peoria Heights Congregational Church and the Caterpillar Retirees Club.
Visitation will be at 10:00 a.m. Friday and Cumerford-Endsley Memorial Home, followed by services there at 11. The Rev. Allan J. Dempsey will officiate and burial will be in Swan Lake Memory Gardens.

Thelma J. Ackerman, 90, of Morton, passed away peacefully in her sleep in the early morning of Saturday, July 4, 2015, at the family farm.
She was born Dec. 7, 1924, in Peoria to Walter B. and Blanche Chinowth Hayes. She married Melvin Ackerman Feb. 3, 1951, in Peoria. He preceded her in death on Dec. 19, 2005.
She was also preceded in death by one grandson, Peter, in 2002; two brothers and three sisters.
Surviving are her children, Kathy (Erie Jones) Ackerman of Seattle, Wash., Margie (Terry) Mottelson of Aurora, Ind., Stan (Catherine) Ackerman of Houston, Texas, Eric (Gayle) Ackerman of Morton, Chris (LeAnn) Ackerman of Seattle, Wash., Jim (Susie) Ackerman of Morton and Quentin (Julie) Ackerman of Tremont; 27 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
Thelma and her husband, Mel, took over the family farm in 1951. They developed a herd of registered Brown Swiss cows which won numerous production awards and were featured on the cover of Hoard's Dairyman.
She was an active leader in 4-H clubs in Morton. Thelma was also involved in the Morton VFW Post 5921 Ladies Auxiliary.
Thelma was very devoted to her children and grandchildren, traveling the country and world to visit them.
A funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Friday, July 10, at Knapp-Johnson Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Morton, with the Rev. Dwight Winnett officiating.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday and one hour prior to service on Friday, both at the funeral home.
Cremation will be accorded following services.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Morton VFW Post 5921 Ladies Auxiliary.

MORTON -- (PNS) -- Melvin Ackerman, son of Mr. and Mrs. C. S. Ackerman, completed his course as aviation machinist's mate at the Naval Air Technical Training Center in Norman, Okla. He graduated September 28. He then had two weeks training at radar school and is now stationed at Pensacola, Fla.

MORTON - Melvin Ackerman, 82, of 26105 Harding Road, Morton, passed at 9:02 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 19, 2005, at the home in which he was born.
His family was by his bedside at his passing.
Melvin was born on Dec. 16, 1923, to Christian S. and Rosa (Jacob) Ackerman. He married Thelma Hayes on Feb. 3, 1951, in Peoria.
Melvin is survived by his wife, Thelma; two daughters, Kathy Ackerman (Erie Jones) of Seattle, Wash., and Margie (Terry) Mortenson of Aurora, Ind.; and five sons, Stan (Catherine) of Houston, Texas, Eric (Gayle) of Morton, Chris (LeAnn) of Auburn, Wash., Jim (Susie) of Morton and Quent (fiancee Julie Hall) of Morton. Melvin is survived by two sisters, Velma Kerr and Lenora Fort; 23 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, one sister and one grandson, Peter Ackerman.
Melvin served in the U.S. Navy during WWII and was an active member of Morton VFW Post 5921 for the past 60 years. He served as post and district chaplain for many years.
Melvin was a dairy farmer for over 30 years. He developed a herd of registered Brown Swiss cows which won numerous production awards and was featured on the cover of Hoards Dairyman. Melvin retired from dairy farming in 1978.
Melvin was a leader of the Morton Labor & Laff 4-H Club for over 20 years. Melvin enjoyed playing pool and trap shooting.
For 16 years, Dad loved watching his sons wrestle. Melvin loved watching and playing softball with family, having famous family cookie and milk picnics, and dancing under the stars with local big bands. Melvin often said, I am the luckiest Grandpa in the whole wide world.
Cremation has been accorded. There will be no services. The family will receive friends and celebrate his life from 4:30 to 7 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 23, in the Lincoln Room of the Ashland House, 201 E. Ashland Street, Morton, Ill.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Apostolic Christian Church in honor of his parents, Christian and Rosa Ackerman.
