Walter Lyman Rodgers1
M, #7175, b. 23 September 1889, d. 8 November 1949
BASIC FACTS
Walter Lyman Rodgers was born on 23 September 1889 in Clinton Co., Indiana.2 He and Pearl Edna Grubb were married on 1 November 1914 in Okmulgee, Okmulgee Co., Oklahoma.3,2 He died on 8 November 1949, at age 60, in Nevada, Missouri.2 Walter Lyman Rodgers had reference number 7439. Walter's and Pearl's son Lowell recalls the following story about a short vacation trip to Nebraska. He said it was the only time he can recall his parents ever travelling to another state to visit relatives.
The trip was in 1929, over the Fourth of July holiday. Walter took a day off work (without pay, of course). He arrived home after work and, with Pearl, Lowell and Lowell's younger brother, took off in the family Ford for Bayard. (The rest of the Rodger's kids stayed with their grandparents, Willie and Stella Grubb.) Later that night they stopped the car and the four of them slept by the side of the road.
Lowell remembers visiting the McCrackens. May (Snyder) McCracken was Pearl's cousin. They were both born in Gage County and were about the same age. Lowell said that the McCracken's farm was immaculate and they had a very nice house and a large barn. He remembers Bob McCracken inviting his father out to the barn for a drink. This was during Prohibition, but there was a pint of whiskey hidden in the barn. Walter took a small sip and Bob had a good sized drink. Lowell says that this was the only time he ever saw his father take a drink. The part he remembers best is everyone gathering around a player piano in the house. Lowell says there were lots of McCracken girls and they would "pump" the piano and sing songs. One song, "There Once Was a Gay Caballero," seemed to be a favorite.
Lowell recalls that they also visited another family while in Bayard. It was probably Rob and Anna Hillman. Rob was Pearl's uncle.
In August of 1946, Walter Rodgers had a stroke that left him severely disabled. He was not able to work at blacksmithing after that. Lowell was living in California and got Pearl a job at a defense plant there. Walter recovered enough to join her and he too was able to get a job. Walter was a good worker, even with his handicap. However, Walter and Pearl eventually quit their jobs in California and returned to a farm in Missouri. Eventully Walter began to have mental problems and was committed to a mental hospital where he died in 1949.
