BASIC FACTS

Addison Emmett "Emmett" Cauble was born on 23 September 1866 in Indiana.3,8,9 He was born on 23 September 1867 in Indiana.7 He was born about 1869 in Indiana.2 He and Sarah "Sallie" Dawalt were married on 18 September 1900 in Washington Co., Indiana.9 He died on 16 November 1938, at age 72.6 He was buried in Crown Hill Cemetery, Salem, Washington Co., Indiana.6
Addison Emmett "Emmett" Cauble had reference number 12684. He was a Farmer (1900 - 1930.)3,5,7 He was enumerated on the census in Washington County, Indiana (1880, 1900 - 1930.) Obituary – The Salem Leader or The Salem Democrat; after November 16, 1938:

ADDISON EMMET CAUBLE
Addison Emmet Cauble, son of Adam W. and Sarah (King) Cauble was born September 23, 1866 on the farm where he spent his entire life.
He departed this life at the home of his brother, Jason Cauble, after a short illness of only ten days, November 16, 1938 at the age of 72 years, 1 month and 13 days.
Emmet was one of a family of eleven children, 9 boys and 2 girls.
Six brothers and one sister have answered the great call; leaving three brothers, Elwood G. of California, Claudius W. and Jason R. of Salem and one sister, Mrs. Ed Zink, Denver, Colorado.
He received his education at the old “Cedar Hill” school that stood on the corner of his old homestead on land donated by his father for school purposes. He worked on the farm and in the immediate neighborhood all his life.
While a young man he joined the Methodist church at Highland during the preaching of Rev. J. N. Blue and retained this membership as long as he lived.
After the parents had passed to their reward, rather than see the old home abandoned, Emmett and some of his brothers lived in the home quite a while; and when the home was sold he became the owner and held it until his death.
On September 18,1900 he was united in marriage to Sarah M. Dawalt who served in this home as a loving companion until November 28, 1909. She was taken and he again was left to battle life alone, which he did until death.
Emmet was a real farmer and was always found at home and on the job. He loved his work and was delighted to see nature produce the crops he planted.
His real worth as a neighbor was felt in the silo ring, the schredding gang or the threshing job as well as all other activities in the neighborhood. He was waiting to help when the call came.
Emmet always said that a man’s own life was his best and truest obituary and so thinks the writer. What more could be said of our good brother and active neighbor? Who will fill his place in the Highland neighborhood?
He leaves the three brothers, the only sister, a host of nephews and nieces and many other relatives and friends to mourn his passing. A highly respected citizen has been taken.

The clock of time is wound but once
And no man has the power
To tell just when the hands will stop,
At late or early hour.
Now is the only time you own
Live, love, toil with a will
Place no faith in tomorrow
For the clock may then be still.

The funeral was held at the home of Jason Cauble and wife Saturday morning at 10:30 o’clock conducted by the Rev. W. Cain and Oliver Trueblood. Burial was in Crown Hill by the side of his wife. W.A.C.

Her Social Security Number was 305-26-7007, issued: Indiana, last residence: Kokomo, Howard Co., Indiana.4 She was educated Graduated from Little York High School; attended some college.5 She was a Teacher - taught in rural schools in Washington and Scott Counties; owned a Studebaker dealership with her husband.5 She was enumerated on the census in Howard County, Indiana (1940.) BIOGRAPHY

Although there isn’t a lot known about Mary Mitchell Payne’s history, one thing is for sure, she was a believer of education. When she died, her will stated that she left money for both Washington and Scott county schools, Washington County Hospital and Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis.
Payne was born July 28, 1895, in Gibson Township to Samuel and Rosina Mitchell. She had two brothers, Warner and Leland and one sister, Nellie Blunt.
She grew up in that area, graduating from Little York High School. She attended some college and eventually became a school teacher. She taught school in rural schools both in Washington and Scott counties.
Loran Payne was born May 5, 1889, also in Washington County. He had five sisters: Leafa, Martha, Maud, Lucretia and Dollyne; and three brothers: Cassius, Claude and Hershel.
Mary and Loran met through their families and enjoyed a 13-year courtship before marrying and moving to Kokomo, IN, where they owned a Studebaker dealership. When the couple sold the dealership, Loran was employed for the rest of his working year at Delco Remy in Kokomo.
Barbara Baynes and her husband, Frederick, are relatives of the Paynes. Barbara said she can remember going to visit them at their Kokomo home in 1964 and they didn’t have a television. Barbara said she thought it was so strange they didn’t have one, but came to find out that they wanted to make sure the television was going to work, that it wasn’t a waste of money before they purchased one. She said they were very thorough, conscious people.
“Hence the 13-year courtship,” she said.
Barbara said the couple was very conservative and she can remember another time she and her husband stopped for a visit and Loran told them Mary had fallen off a ladder while painting the eves on the house.
When they went inside, Barbara asked Mary if she was OK and Mary said she was fine, it was the whole can of paint she dropped that she was upset about.
Mary’s nephew, Kenny Mitchell, said he remembers his aunt as a stern lady. “She was an ex-school teacher, so I didn’t get away with much,” he said.
