Emily Mahan Faust, eulogized as the “grande dame of the Knoxville theater community” died Thursday at age 96.
Mrs. Faust, a Knoxville native who followed her love of the arts to New York and later opened her own drama studio, was remembered by family, friends and former students for her tireless support of the arts.
“I shall carry her close to my heart for the rest of my days,” said former student and Oscar-winning actress Patricia Neal, as quoted by the Faust family. “Emily was my very first drama teacher. She loved me, and I cherished that love. I am deeply, deeply saddened by her passing.”
Other students included opera singer Mary Costa, and actress and teacher Carol Mayo Jenkins.
Mrs. Faust opened the Emily Mahan School of Drama in Knoxville in 1937 and later was instrumental in the founding of the Carousel and Clarence Brown theaters at the University of Tennessee. The Emily Mahan Faust Fellowship, established as a birthday present by her late husband, Hugh D. Faust Jr., continues to be given annually to students in UT’s graduate level theatre program.
“We … are saddened by the loss of such a great lady and indebted to her for her inspiring support of the professional lives of countless young people,” Calvin McLean, the Clarence Brown’s artistic director and head of the theater department, said through the family.
Mrs. Faust and her husband, an assistant football coach under Gen. Robert Neyland, married in 1938 and remained together 60 years. They are survived by children Hugh D. Faust III, Edgar M. Faust and Cynthia Faust Foster, as well as seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

The Emily Mahan Faust Fellowship, which continues to be given annually to promising young graduate level theater students at UT, was first established as a birthday present in her honor by her husband, Hugh.
