He has especially been interested in sponsoring scholarships and youth activities. John B. Boy Jr. graduated from UF in 1979 with a degree in accounting.
OBITUARY - Find-A-Grave
John B. Boy, age 96, of LaBelle, passed away peacefully July 16, 2013 in Lehigh Acres. He was born March 17, 1917 in Johnson City, TN to David C. and Kathleen Boy and was the second of three brothers.
He graduated from Georgia Tech with a degree in mechanical engineering. During his time at Georgia Tech, John was on the Honor Roll, a member of Omicron Delta Kappa and Tau Beta Pi, Phi Eta Sigma, Bulldog Club, Pi Delta Epsilon, A.S.M.E, Skull and Key, Interfraternity Council, Technique Editor in Chief, Yellowjacket, Blue Print, Student Council, ANAK Vice-President and Athletic Association Student Member.
Following graduation, he worked for Proctor and Gamble at the Buckeye Oil Company until WWII broke out and at that time enlisted in the U. S. Navy. He served our nation throughout the entire war and became the Captain of three different ships -a subchaser, USS C350, a patrolcraft, USS PC613 and destroyer escort, the USS Holton, DE-703. John and his crew from the USS Holton held annual reunions that were filled with great passion and memories of their younger years. While in the Navy on assignment in Miami, John met and married the love of his life, Nancy Adams, who predeceased him.
Shortly after the war, John went to work for United States Sugar Corporation in 1946. Through his engineering ingenuity, he improved the efficiency and productivity of sugar cane harvesting by converting/redesigning track mounted tractors to rubber tires which was combined with his successful redesign of sugar cane loading machines. Those redesigns allowed the Florida sugar cane industry to begin a process of mass production in the fields and factories which ultimately led to the size and efficiency of today's industry.
John later became Executive Vice President of the Corporation in 1961 which led to his promotion to President/CEO in 1970, a position he held until his retirement in 1987. He became Vice-Chairman of the Board of Directors at that time. Under his leadership, the Corporation not only prospered by tripling its production, but he led the way in charitable giving to the surrounding communities of swimming pools, youth centers, an auditorium, day care facilities, housing projects and multiple scholarship programs. Two of his proudest achievements during his tenure as President were the creation of an Employee Stock Ownership Plan whereby the employees would own 47% of the Corporation and the commencement of the diversification of the Corporation into the growing/processing of citrus.
John was the beloved and respected leader of the sugar industry as noted by the numerous accolades that he accumulated and/or achieved during his career which included "Sugar Man of the Year', Florida Agriculture Hall of Fame, Honorary Doctor of Humanities-Florida Atlantic University, "White Hat" award by Agribusiness Institute, President of the Florida Sugar Cane League, President of the Florida Sugar Marketing and Terminal Association, State Director of Florida Chamber of Commerce, Council of 100, Florida Land Council, Florida Farm Bureau, 1975 Citizen of the Year for Clewiston, Florida and Dedication of the Sugar Festival in 1992.
He is survived by daughter: Betsy Terrill (Jim), sons: John Boy, Jr. (Connie) and H. Lane Boy, grandchildren: Jamie Terrill, Christopher Smith, Jennifer Price, Suzanne Boy, Stephanie Crawford, Rachael Boy and ten great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held Thursday, July 18, 2013 from 6-8 p.m. at Akin-Davis Funeral Home in Clewiston, Florida. The following extraction from the National Registration of Historical Places describes the building that at one time housed the textile school.
5. Riverside & Dan River Cotton Mills, Inc., Textile School. 1890s; 1920s; ca. 1980.Contributing building.
Two-and-a-half-story building of five-course American-bond brick construction built for mixed commercial use. The building was acquired by Dan River Inc. for use as a textile school and given a Classical Revival facade, probably in the 1920s. The facade is faced with stretcher-bond brickwork with stretcher-header courses every five courses, and it features Indiana limestone and cast-stone (concrete) accents such as panels with abstract patterns and covered urns and swags, copings, quoins, window-opening keystones, and a parapet with balusters, urns, and scroll buttresses. A cut-away southeast comer is supported by scrolled wrought iron brackets. The first story of the facade was bricked up about 1980 but it retains limestone piers. Other features of the building include 616 and 212 windows, segmental-arched window openings on the sides and back, stepped side parapets, and beaded matchboard doors and a modem steel loading dock canopy to the rear.
Behind (to the west) of the building extend parking lots in the location of former mill buildings and a buried section of the power canal (see inv. no. 9). A waterwheel, foundations, and other remains are likely buried here. On the south side of the building in the bend of Main Street is a ca. 1980 park with plantings of trees and shrubs, brick walks, concrete benches, and a flag pole (the park is located outside the district; it apparently lies over a section of buried power canal).
A foundation belonging to a building demolished before 1877 occupied the site in 1886. The present building first appears on the 1899 Sanborn map with a carriage repository and a dry goods and grocery store as ground-floor tenants. The National Biscuit Co. occupied part of the building in 1910, and by 1920 the entire building was occupied by a hardware store. In the 1930s the building was used as the Riverside & Dan River Cotton Mills, Inc., Textile School, a use that explains the Classical Revival upgrade of the front facade to coordinate with surrounding mill-owned buildings (Sanborn maps).

WEDDING RECEPTION - The Comet; Johnson City, Tennessee; September 30, 1909, Image 12 (Website: http://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov)
WEDDING RECEPTION AT AUSTIN SPRINGS
Mrs. William DeVault gave a most elegant and charming reception at her beautiful home on the Watauga on Thursday afternoon in honor of her son's bride, Mrs. A. Beverly DeVault. The hours were from three to four and from five to seven.
The guests were welcomed in the hall by Mrs. E. S. Kendrick, in a toilette of black lace over taffeta, and Miss Ella McNeil, who wore a dainty white lingerie with trimmings of baby Irish lace.
In the receiving line were Mrs. William V. DeVault, Mrs. A. Beverly DeVault, Mr. James Newby, a brother of the bride, and Mrs. Hugh Hill.
Mrs. William DeVault wore a gown of green messaline with trimmings of old rose and cream lace.
Mrs. Beverly DeVault wore her bridal gown of handsome white satin, hand-embroidered with pearl and diamond ornaments, and Mrs. Hugh Hill appeared in black spangled net.
The parlor, library and hall were decorated in golden rod, the color scheme being yellow and white, artistically entwined from the chandelier in the dining-room to the four corners of the table, was soft, white tulle, on which were innumerable small yellow hearts suspended from white ribbons. On the center of the table resting on an exquisite lace center-piece, was a bowl of bride's roses. Mrs. A. J. Tyler, who served in the dining-room, wore a black net dress over satin and was assisted by Misses Clara Reeves, Lois Reeves and Claude DeVault, who wore dresses of yellow crepe de chine with white and gold lace.
Miss Eula Lee Kendrick, in a costume of green messaline, ushered the guests into the dining-room and from there to the library, where coffee and hot chocolate were served by Mrs. Samuel Browder and Mrs. E. A. Long. Out in the spacious circle of the wide veranda, Mrs. James Martin and Mrs. Robert DeVault served grape punch from a bowl decorated with bunches of purple grapes and green foliage.
A charming little rustic picture was given out on the lawn under the spreading oaks. A table, from which was served luscious watermelons and sweet cider, was presided over by Mr. William DeVault, Judge A. J. Tyler, Capt. A. S. McNeil and Dr. F. B. Hannah.
Note: Some of the people mentioned in the article are:
Mrs. William DeVault: Barbara E. (Higginbotham) DeVault (1861 - 1932), daughter of Reese Bowen Higginbotham and Louise Jame Emmons. At the time of this reception, Barbara was second wife of William Valentine DeVault. She would later marry William's cousin, George Valentine DeVault.
Mrs. A. Beverly DeVault: Amelia Elizabeth (Newby) DeVault (1887 - 1973), daughter of Cyrus Newby and Anna Catherine "Kitty" Herron. Amelia had just married Albert Beverly "Beverly" DeVault,
Mrs. E. S. Kendrick: Mary Elfrida (DeVault) Kendrick (1861 - 19??), daughter of George Henry "Henry" DeVault and Emily Seraphina Berry. Mary was the wife of Everett Stuart Kendrick.
Miss Clara Reeves: Clara Boring Reeves (1884 - 1968), daughter of George Alexander "Fred" Reeves and Addie May Boring. Clara would later marry Horace Bishop Stevens.
Miss Lois Reeves: Mary Lois "Lois" Reeves (1886 - 1911), daughter of Isaac Edward Reeves and Mary Malinda Dosser. Lois never married. She died just over two years after this reception was given.
