OBITUARY - Find-A-Grave
Samuel E Pillow, known as Roy, was born in Vicksburg, Mississippi on 4 May 1927. His family was dirt poor and they lived on a houseboat on the Mississippi River. When the market crashed, his father had to sell their car to buy a milk cow for the children. At age 12 Dad left his home in Mississippi and headed for California on his own, hitch hiked his way across country all by himself, the family joined him a year later. He found a family to live with until they arrived. He completed the 8th grade. Was in the Navy during WWII as a machinist/fireman, served on the USS Pentheus and often talked about his time in the Philippines. After the navy he used the GI Bill to learn plumbing, but didn't like that career so eventually learned the carpenter trade on his own. Dad was on a construction crew that built Frontierland at the original Disneyland when I was in the first grade. Most of that area has been redone, very little of the original set still exists, but every time I go there I think of Dad. He was self taught to play the guitar, spent most of his free time playing by himself but played with friends when they were available. He also played the harmonica and the banjo. Roy's hobby late in life was wood working, he made yard ornaments and enjoyed selling them at swap meets. Roy did the woodwork and Lou did the detailing. He also enjoyed collecting coins. Though Dads education was limited, he was an avid reader, especially enjoyed the Bible and history. Dad loved his grandchildren and wrote songs to sing to his only granddaughter. None of us ever wrote down the words and they are now lost.
After Mom retired, Dad and she traveled extensively in the US, mostly to visit family as their 3 children were scattered around the country. I think partly it was to get away from the AZ heat in the summertime, but it wasn't always summer when they traveled. I think going to OR to visit their son was their favorite destination, they loved OR scenery and weather in the summer. Dad had bought a 1966 Ford pickup in Aug of 1965 and drove it until his death in 1999, one of his grandsons drives it now. That truck was used to haul a travel trailer when they traveled.
