Cause investigated
Plane Crash kills 3
By JAMES RYGELSKI (Staff Writer)
Federal aviation investigators today are attempting to reconstruct the twin engine plane in which a nationally known dentist and two other men died Saturday night near Yates City.
Killed in the flaming crash about 2 1/2 miles west of Yates City were Dr. Robert F. Barkley, 46, Macomb; Roger Runyan, 32, Fort Madison, Iowa, the pilot; and Jay L. Feddes, 28, Manhattan, Mont., a student pilot.
According to witnesses and investigators, Runyan may have been trying to make an emergency landing at a small airport.
Runyan was a "competent" pilot, William Moore, a 31-year veteran air safety investigator for the National Transportation Safety Board said today as investigation started.
THE PLANE IS being examined at Galesburg Municipal Airport, where wreckage was taken Sunday.
Mike Phipps, airport manager, this morning said the investigation could take months.
"They'll take each component and examine it," he said. "They'll first look at the tangible evidence and then they'll speculate what he was trying to do and what might have happened."
A report will be given to the safety board when the investigation is completed and the board will rule on the probable cause of the crash.
Moore said this morning that a flight recorder wasn't carried on the commuter plane.
The left wing of the plane was burning before the crash, witnesses said.
CRASH SITE was about 35 feet north of Ill. 8 and about 200 yards south of Tri-county Airport, where Runyon [name spelled two different ways in this article] apparently was trying to land.
Moore told a photographer this morning the pilot "knew where he was" and said it was "highly likely" Runyon was trying to land at the strip.
Reportedly, the plane hit nose first, overturned and landed right side up in the eastbound lane of the highway while a part of a wing and the engine blocked the westbound lane. Knox County sherirr's deputies closed the road to traffic until Sunday about 1 p.m.
No motorists were endangered by the crash, deputies said.
The three men were pronounced dead at the scene by Knox County Coroner Roger Hannam, who said an inquest will be held after completion of tests on blood samples from the victims.
THE CESSNA aircraft was enroute from Chicago to Macomb when it crashed. It was scheduled to complete its flight in Port Madison after a stop in Macomb.
Barkley was well-known in the dental field, writing a 1971 book, "Successful Preventive Dental Practice," and numerous articles.
He was promoting primarily, patent acceptance of some responsibility for keeping their mouths healthy . . . rather than having a dentist patch up the disease processes," Dr. Charles Borden Jr., a Galesburg Orthodontist, said today.
A staff member of the University of Southern California, Barkley was using a grant from the U.S. Department of Health, Education and Welfare to continue his research. [This article continues with the obituaries of the three men that were killed in the crash.]
