Julia E. Millham
NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Julia E. "Judy" Millham, born March 22, 1921 in Washington D.C., to Errett J. and Claudia Covington Garst, died peacefully of congestive heart failure on Tuesday, Nov. 8, 2005 in Nashville, Tenn., surrounded by her family.
Judy was preceded in death by her husband, Merle P. Millham, and son ,Steven D. Millham. Raised in Wichita, Kan., Judy had amazing musical talent from an early age. She held her first church organist position at the age of 14. Over her long musical career she studied and taught organ, piano and voice, privately and in public schools, and accompanied many singers, in addition to singing herself. In her later years, she took several trips to New York City for music and tours with the Metropolitan Opera Guild for opera in places such as Russia and England. She also traveled with friends down the Amazon River, making a pilgrimage to Buenos Aires to visit the church where memorial services had been held for her son, Steven, when he died there during a business trip in 1981. Judy's love of music followed her to the end, as she took her last breaths during the final strains of the beautiful "Meditation" from the opera Thais.
Judy and Merle were married at Albrook Field Chapel in the Panama Canal Zone on Sept. 15, 1944, and over nearly 40 years of marriage lived in McComb and Findlay, Ohio, and Aiken. Judy loved attention to detail in all things, and also worked as a bookkeeper, partnering with Merle in their Aiken printing business, Manor Press. After Merle's death in 1984, Judy lived in Dayton, Ohio for a few years, but returned to Aiken to live near her friends until declining health took her to Nashville, Tenn., to be near her granddaughters. Judy and Merle felt that they had been given interesting and useful lives. They thanked the Lord for wonderful family and friends.
Judy is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Martha (Mert) and Wade Adams of Houston, Texas, and her granddaughters Julie Adams and Keri Adams of Nashville, Tenn., and Julie's husband Richard Smith. Also surviving is Judy's daughter-in-law, Mary Elam Millham Rodriguez of Maple Glen, Pa..
A memorial service will be held at St. John's United Methodist Church in Aiken at 10 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 30, 2006. Interment at Bethany Cemetery in Aiken, South Carolina by George Funeral Home. Memorial gifts may be sent to the Organ Fund, St. John's United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 809, Aiken SC 29802.

Merle Philip Millham1
M, #25378, b. 29 January 1917, d. 5 May 1984
BASIC FACTS
Merle Philip Millham was born on 29 January 1917 in Liberal, Seward Co., Kansas.2,3 He and Julia Evelyn "Judy" Garst were married on 15 September 1944 in Panama Canal Zone.1,4,5 He died on 5 May 1984, at age 67, in Greenwood, Greenwood Co., South Carolina.2,3 Merle Philip Millham had reference number 25655. He held the title Capt. His Social Security Number was 512-05-2159, Kansas, last residence: Aiken, Aiken Co., South Carolina.2 He was educated Educated at Wichita College, Kansas and Stanford University.3 World War II, U.S. Army.3 He was a Newspaper man and printer.3 OBITUARY - Aiken Standard (Aiken, SC); page 1B column 1; Friday, May 11, 1984:
Merle P. Millham
In the 18 years that Merle Millham lived in Aiken, he led a quiet life that was in striking contrast to his eventful past. For one thing, there were health problems that increasingly forced him to forgo participation in many community activities.
He died May 5 at the Greenwood Methodist Home.
When American occupation forces landed in Japan in 1945, they were handed a copy of Yank magazine reporting Japan's capitulation and the subsequent Allied occupation by the very troops who were arriving. Yank's staff had beaten the GIs to Japan, and it was a scoop Merle Millham remembered all his life, for he headed the Yank bureau on Okinawa that engineered the feat.
A native of Liberal, Kans., Mr. Millham was educated at Wichita College in his home state and at Stanford University. He worked in California as a printer before entering the Army during World War II.
He earned a commission at OCS school. As the Americans advanced in the Pacific, he moved to the Philippines and — with printing experience behind him — was placed in charge of Yank.
He became the close friend of the first Philippine president, Manuel Roxas, who dedicated to Merle Millham the book Roxas wrote about the liberation of the Philippines.
Mr. Millham returned to Ohio and established a weekly newspaper, the Hancock County News. He sold that and continued to operate a printing business.
He and his family enjoyed traveling, and on one of their trips they discovered Aiken. They aquired a vacation home on Etherredge's Pond and gradually the family moved to Aiken. Mr. Millham four years later founded Manor Press, which offered quality printing services.
He was an active churchman, having helped to establish a church in Ohio, and he was a faithful member of St. John's United Methodist Church in Aiken,
He was a versatile person, who enjoyed music and the arts, and he was a strong supporter of cultural affairs.
Tragedy struck the Millham family a few years ago when their only son Steve died after a sudden illness soon after arriving in Buenos Aries with his wife to begin a South American assignment for his company. He was 32. In his memory, Mr. Millham and his wife and daughter established a chancellor's scholarship at the University of South Carolina Aiken campus, which Steve attended.
Though he had suffered from declining health, Mr. Millham's death creates a deep sense of loss to the many persons who knew this fine gentleman. We extend our sincere sympathies to his family.

Dale N. Garst, 88 - Sanitation director, farmer
Garst, Dale N., 88, loving husband, father, grandfather, and retired City of Wichita, Kan. sanitation director, died Saturday, May 20, 2006. Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Mary Elizabeth, of Wichita; son, John Garst and wife Mary Jo, of Alamogordo; daughter, Janet Bernstein and husband Joe, of Sherman Oaks, Calif.; grandchildren, Robert and Diane Garst, Jacob and wife Tova, Jenny, Jeremiah, Joshua, Judah and Gabriella Bernstein.
As sanitation director, Dale planned the city's first sanitation routes 50 years ago, as well as organizing street cleaning and snow removal. Retiring after 30 years of civil service, Dale lived out his dream by owning a 139-acre farm off K-15 at 55th Street South. With 3,000 bushels of wheat, and pounds of melons, squash, and tomatoes harvested per season, Dale's farming was as successful and satisfying as his service to the city.
He was a sensitive and kind man with a strong commitment to his family, friends, religion, and the many dogs he saved throughout his years. He will be deeply missed by all whose lives he touched. A memorial has been established with First Church of the Brethren. Send condolences and view video tributes at smithfamilymortuaries.com, at the upper right corner under "Home."
