BASIC FACTS

Okie Dell Arnett was born in September 1899 in South Dakota.1 She and Jesse James Chapman were married on 8 May 1916 in Jackson Co., South Dakota.6 She died on 24 March 1932, at age 32, in Pennington Co., South Dakota.6
Okie Dell Arnett was also known as Sadie Lee Unknown.7 She had reference number 28496. She was enumerated on the census in Hutchinson County, South Dakota (1900); Lyman County, South Dakota (1910); South Dakota (1915); Jones County, South Dakota (1920); Jackson County, South Dakota (1920); Pennington County, South Dakota (1930.) She was a Waiter - hotel (1920); housework - hotel (1930.)4,5 She resided in Okaton, Lyman County, South Dakota (1916); Rapid City, Pennington County, South Dakota (1930.)6 Okie's grandparents were Robert and Elizabeth Arnett. Apparently they had four children, Myrtle, Ella, Curtis and a fourth daughter. It appears that the fourth daughter was the mother of Okie. Okie was probably married after 1915 as she was listed in the 1915 South Dakota Census as Okie Arnett.

Okie appears to be listed twice in the 1920 Census. Once with her family and once working as a waiter in a hotel. In this second listing she says she is widowed. In the 1930 Census she is living with her sister, Ella, and is doing housework in a hotel. I would say that Jesse and Okie were separated in 1920 and he reported her as living with the family.

JOE LEE
"My father, Joseph Fred Lee, was born October 9, 1911. He was the eldest son of Harry Martin Lee and Udolpha Ann (Chapman) Lee. He was born on his mother's homestead which was located between Okaton and Murdo in south-central South Dakota. His mother and his father had filed on adjoining 160 acre homesteads prior to their marriage. In Dad's very early years, his father used his remaining homestead eligibility to acquire 480 acres of land in the Sand Hills of Nebraska, about 20 miles from Nenzel. Since medical assistance was scarce for homesteaders in remote areas, his mother returned to her father's home for the birth of her next three children, Lynden, Mary Ellen, and Lora. In about 1919, a severe hailstorm killed the hay crop his father had planned to use to feed the cattle he was raising. Harry bought a piece of land near Okaton which had a crop of hay ready to be harvested. He moved his herd of cattle to Okaton and relocated his family. After harvesting the hay and feeding his cattle, he sold the Okaton property and stock and purchased a grocery store in Okaton. The Nebraska property wasn't sold until some ten years later.
The Lee family remained in Okaton until 1927, just prior to Joe's junior year in high school, when his father decided to move to the west coast. The Lee's became dairy farmers near the town of Astoria, Oregon. Leaving the somewhat harsh dry climate of South Dakota to settle in one of the rainiest areas of the continental United States was an environmental shock to the Lee family. Joe was a good student and athlete, but the family responsibilities of the morning and evening milking schedule prevented him from participating in athletics. He and his sisters, Lynden and Mary Ellen, did play in a dance band which entertained on weekends.
In 1929, Joe's father decided to abandon the wet, overcast Oregon coast and return to the more familiar country of South Dakota. A grocery store was purchased in the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation town of Wanblee. This small town was the home of the Jacob Milton Woods family, one of the first white families to settle in that area. The youngest of the Woods family was Rose Anna, who would eventually become Joe's wife. Harry not only had the grocery store in Wanblee, but he was also the International Harvester dealer for that area. This turned out to be a problem because of the combination of the drought and the great depression. During those years the farmers couldn't pay for their equipment and Harry lost a great deal of money. He was one of the few dealers in that area who paid off his debt or returned the merchandise to International Harvester. Long before marriage was in the wind, Rose Woods and Lynden rode from Wanblee to Sioux Falls on the back of a flat bed truck, under a tractor Mr. Lee was returning to the company. Another passenger, who was more privileged, rode in the cab of the truck with Mr. Lee. Harry had purchased some wooded land in the western part of Washabaugh Co. and had a saw mill. Prior to enrolling at the University of South Dakota for the 1930-31 year, Joe worked in the saw mill. Lynden wanted to attend college so Joe stayed home the next year because the family could not support two in college at the same time. In 1932-33 he went back to U. of S.D. and majored in Pre-Law. One of his professors suggested that he drop everything else and concentrate on accounting. He found out later that that professor was one of the people who later helped put together the C.P.A. test for the state. McCullough, went to Gering, Nebr., to be married. Rose hadn't yet had her twenty-first birthday and South Dakota required parental permission for minors. Nebraska did not have the same requirement and they didn't want to wait for the time it would have taken to get the permission. At that time Joe was running the store in Wanblee. On September 4, 1935, Geraldine May was born in Wanblee. Two years later, Joe opened a grocery store in Kadoka.
In 1938, because business was too slow for the Wanblee store to support both Joe and his father's family, Joe and Rose moved to Wyoming where he worked in oil fields for a few months. Rose was pregnant when they moved back to Wanblee. Jeffrey Martin was born June 24th of that year in a hospital in Rapid City.
Joe began to process of buying out the Wanblee store from his father. Harry has hauling groceries to a store in Wall, run by Lynden and her husband Russell Meiners, one in Okaton, run by Lora and the Wanblee store. The Wall and Okaton stores were not doing well and were both closed. Lora moved back to Wanblee. Lynden and Russell went to live at his father's ranch in Wasta.
In the summer of 1940, Joe decided to strike out on his own and left South Dakota to settle somewhere on the west coast. After visiting Wenatchee, Washington and friends in Astoria, Oregon they wound up in Klamath Falls, Oregon where they visited an old South Dakota friend, Fenton "Stub" Mahrt. One of the first jobs Joe had was to help Stub unload a circus. He met a man in the line at the employment office who asked if he was a carpenter. Joe said he had done a little carpentry work, which was more than his newly met friend, and they were off to remodel an apartment. One of the features of the remodel job was repairing a spiral staircase, a mean task for two amateur carpenters. They finished the job and within a week Joe was able to get on at a local lumber mill.
A friend, Hazel Michael, came to visit. (On the way out from S.D., they had stopped in Payette, Idaho. Her folks, the Huffs, took care of Jeff and Jeri when Joe and Rose went with Paul and Hazel to Burns.) They took her to a night club. Rose danced with a man who worked for the Great Northern Railroad. By that time Joe was selling cars and because it was evident the country would soon be involved in the war, the automobile manufactures had stopped making cars. Rose told the railroad man that her husband was looking for a job. He said "Introduce me and I'll tell him about an opening at the railroad." The introduction was made and Joe had a job with the Great Northern the next day.
He started checking cars in the switching yards, spent a short time in the Beiber, California office, moved back to the Klamath Falls office as cashier, and was eventually named, Chief Clerk to the Traffic Department for the Klamath Falls terminal. He worked a total of eight years for the Great Northern. That period of time included the war years and, for the few like Joe, who were in defense jobs, were uncomfortable years. He tried to enter the service but was not allowed to because of his job.
In the winter of 1945, Joe and Rose awaited the birth of their third child. Jeri and Jeff were truly excited about a new baby coming into the household. However, as it turned out, the birth of Merrie Ellen, on December 25, 1945, resulted in one of their most memorable holidays. Mom was in the hospital and Dad had to get to her bedside on Christmas morning. He took Jeri and Jeff to spend the day with some close friends, the Menti's. Since they couldn't take all of their Christmas gifts along with them, he limited them to one toy each. Jeri took a doll and Jeff took a cap pistol. The Menti kids refused to let their visitors touch any of their new toys throughout the day.
Work at the railroad was not the easiest during the war years. During one period, he worked over 365 days straight, without a day off. Included in that period was one 30 day stretch of double shift, 16 hour/days. The railroad wages, along with a part-time job keeping books for a used car lot, did provide the capital and the incentive for him to buy his own business in 1948, the Henley Store.
The obligations of running a country store which was open seven days a week were at least as demanding as his work with the railroad. While with the railroad, he became active as a member of the Masons. He had gone through the offices in Commandery & Royal Arch of the lodge. Since the store remained open until 9:00 p.m. each night, he found it difficult to continue his involvement with the lodge and had to decline an opportunity for a state office.
Living in an apartment attached to a country store was a unique experience for Lee family. Eating habits for the kids were formed because we had to "eat fast so Dad can be relieved in the store." He very seldom got to eat with the rest of the family. Some very strange conversations developed because of this living arrangements. Joe had a propensity to think about a conversation which had taken place in the house and was interrupted by a customer's arrival in the store. An hour or two after the conversation had been interrupted, the store would become clear of customers and he would return to the house and launch right back into the same conservation, sometimes in mid-sentence. The rest of the family had trouble following the train of thought of these interrupted dialogs. I often wondered what happened when Dad would return to the house with a half-finished sentence and we'd all be gone.
For the first few years of operation, Joe leased the Henley Store from Sarah Harshbarger, the granddaughter of James T. Henley, for whom the area and the school was named. When she passed away, the store, surrounding buildings and some adjoining property was purchased from here estate. The store was situated across the highway from Henley High School. Through the years, the store had a healthy noon hour and after school business from the students at the school. However, the 1950's and the 1960's saw the growth in domination of the grocery business by "super markets". "Mom and Pop" grocery stores were fading from the scene. Joe was able to buy the remaining stock from a number of these small stores as they closed. Profits from the sale of these goods made the store profitable. By the 1970's, the charge account business was almost gone, farmers were buying most of their groceries at supermarkets and the 7-Eleven type convenience stores picked up most of the business. The relative demise of country grocery stores and Joe's 65th birthday coincidently came together and he closed the store in June of 1977.
Unwilling to "give the place away" Joe and Rose stayed on in the apartment attached to the store for several years. The store building was rented a couple of times during those years, but the renters weren't able to continue their businesses. In 1985, Rose won a mobile home in a Payless Drug Store drawing. In December of 1985, the Henley property sold. Joe had finally gotten the down payment he wanted. He and Rose moved into the mobile home which was situated in a mobile home park on Homedale Road.
In the early summer of 1986, Joe was diagnosed to have lung cancer. He received treatments through the summer and passed away an September 13, 1986. His funeral service was attended by an overflowing number of those who lived and respected him.
Dad very seldom told a "joke", but he loved to tell stories. His truly honest nature didn't even allow much embellishment to his stories. The setting of most of their tales was "back home", South Dakota. He greatly respected his father and enjoyed those remembrances which indicated his father's shrewd business sense. One of the oft told stories took place during one of the coldest South Dakota winters. Grandpa Lee had hauled to Wanblee a truckload of potatoes in below zero temperatures. By the time he arrived in Wanblee, the potatoes were frozen solid. As he was unloading the sacks of "rocks", Dad remarked that the potatoes were ruined and would never be sold. Grandpa Lee didn't respond. When the next rancher asked for potatoes, Grandpa Lee pointed at the sacks on the front porch of the store. After a quick inspection, the rancher said, "Those spuds are frozen." Grandpa Lee responded, "They'd be frozen by the time you get home anyway." The rancher took the potatoes. In fact, the bitter cold temperatures stayed on until the entire truckload of "rocks" was gone.
Dad liked nice cars. In a way, it was his way of emulating his father, who, in his early years, liked good teams and a fancy buggy. Dad used to love to tell about his father's ability to match horses, sometimes hundreds of miles apart, and put them together in beautiful teams. Dad also told the story to when his father decided that it was time for little Joe to have a good dog. The two of them traveled to another town where a man raised bulldogs. Grandpa Lee asked the man about their strength and tenacity. The man took two pups, got each to bite either end of a leather strap and suspended the strap over a nearby clothesline. To Dad's amazement, the pups hung there while Grandpa Lee and the man finished their extended conversation. Grandpa Lee bought both pups for Dad. Dad told about sending those bulldogs into either end of a culvert which was occupied by a skunk. He said that he had quite a time taking what was left of the skunk away from the dogs. He even had a harder time getting back into the house. His mother wouldn't allow him in until he'd stripped naked and both he and the dogs had been hosed down."

His career started to fall apart due to a deteriorating relationship with his wife Alice. He "accidentally" enlisted in the military one day while he was heavily intoxicated. When he realized what he had done, he decided to disappear altogether. He traveled around for several years, working as a rancher in the midwest, before returning to his family in South San Francisco in the late 1960's.

Seven Brisbane children were orphaned this Christmastide when both their parents were killed in a grinding one-car crash on Old Bayshore Road, late yesterday.
Leon Durham, 40, and his wife, Betta, 39, were returning home shortly after 4 p.m. when their car went into a spin on the rain-slick road and hurtled into a bulldozer parked some ten yards off the pavement.
Long-Time Residents
The Durhams were pronounced dead on arrival at Peninsula Hospital, where they were taken immediately after the accident.
The couple were long-time residents of Brisbane, residing at 169 Lake Street.
Durham was co-owner of the Hot Corner Bar in San Francisco. His wife worked as a cocktail waitress at Basin Street West, also in San Francisco.
The couple is survived by seven children, ranging in age from 5 to 20 years old, and two grandchildren.
Eldest of the Durham children is Esther Heinzle, 100 East Moltke Avenue, Daly City.
In School
The other children all reside in Brisbane. They are Jeffery, 5; Randy, 8; Paula 13; Ricky, 16; Larry, 17, and Lonnie, 18.
The three youngest children attend school is Brisbane, while the eldest attend Jefferson High School in Daly City.
Police said apparently Mrs. Durham was driving the vehicle at the time of the accident.
The force of the impact threw Mrs. Durham over to the passenger’s side of the car, Police said.
A family spokesman said funeral arrangements were pending.
