TETANUS CAUSES CHILD'S DEATH
Tearing of Vaccination Scab Believed Cause of Infection
Four Injections of Antitoxin Failed to Save Life of George J. Black. Had Just Started to School.
George J. Black, six year old son of Mr. and Mrs. George P. Black, 401 Baltimore street, died Friday night at 9:30 o'clock in the West Side Sanitorium, York, from tetanus believed to have been caused by the infection of a vaccination scab. Four different injections of antitoxin, totaling 20,000 units, by the flesh and by the spine, were given in an effort to save the child's life. The boy, who was one of the brightest in the beginners' class in the public school, was conscious until fifteen minutes before his death. He suffered excruciating pain.
The child was vaccinated on August 24. On Monday of this week while coming home from school he was thrown to the sidewalk while playing with other boys and the scab knocked loose. Mrs. Black bandaged the arm and took him to a physician after dinner. The vaccination was treated and he went to school in the afternoon. He was apparently in good health until Wednesday evening when his parents noticed he was fretful and complained of pain in the chest, throat and arm.
Because of the fact that diphteria had been discovered in the school building he attended it was thought he might have contracted that disease and they treated him for sore throat. He went to school Thursday morning apparently not ill enough to be kept at home.
On Thursday noon, however, his condition was worse and Mr. and Mrs. Black took him again to a physician and they were told that proper precautions had been taken. He was take to bed at 9:30 and while his father was assisting the boy in his room, the child had a convulsion. A physician was immediately summoned and a consultation was called.
At midnight it was decided to take him to the West Side Sanitorium at York. They reached the hospital at 1 o'clock where the parents were informed the patient was in a very serious condition. Despite the heroic efforts made by the parents and the physicians he died Friday evening.
He leaves his parents, Mr. and Mrs. George P. Black and one sister, Sara.
Funeral Monday afternoon at the house at 3 o'clock, conducted by Rev. J. B. Baker. Interment in Evergreen cemetery.
