RETIRED FARMER AND EX-COUNTY OFFICIAL DIES
Reuben Schwartz, 79, Gettysburg R. 1, a retired farmer, died Saturday afternoon at 4:45 o'clock at his home along the Littlestown road as the result of injuries inflicted when he was struck by a truck Friday morning at a stone quarry near his home.
The deceased was a farmer nearly all of his life and was an Adams county commissioner for one term. He was a member of St. James Lutheran church and was the last of a family of eight children.
He was born in Mt. Joy township, a son of the late Jacob and Catherine (Overdeer) Schwartz, and always resided in Adams county. He had recollections of soldiers drowning in a creek near his home where they went to obtain water following the Battle of Gettysburg. Heavy rains had swollen the creek. The Schwartz home was used as a field hospital during the battle.
Surviving are one daughter, Miss Verna A., and one son, Ernest D., both at home.
Funeral services from the H. B. Bender and Son funeral home Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock conducted by the Rev. Spencer W. Aungst, pastor of St. James Lutheran church. Interment in Evergreen cemetery.
