NILES - Edward J. Voogd, 94, of Lewis Drive, Niles, Michigan, died following a brief illness at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, October 2, 2007, in his home. Mr. Voogd was born on October 13, 1912, in Muskegon, Michigan, to Joseph and Emma (Kerr) Voogd. He had lived in Niles since 1950, coming from Muskegon. He was employed for many years in sales and design at the former Martin Brothers Contractors, Benton Harbor, Michigan. Edward was a member and former usher at Saint Paul's Lutheran Church in Niles. A veteran of World War II, he served in the United States Army, participating in campaigns in Berlin, the Battle of the Bulge and Omaha Beach. Through the efforts of his family, he received this honor 55 years later at a family ceremony on Christmas Eve. He loved golf and was an avid player. He enjoyed fly fishing, and learned how to tie flies. A love of music lead him to play the violin and also to become a vocalist on the Christian radio station. One time Ed and another Niles resident sang on the Amos and Andy radio program. An affectionate man by nature, Ed loved to "kiss in the kitchen." In December 1940, in Muskegon, he married the former Mary Alyce Leffering, who preceded him in death. Edward later married on September 11, 1982, in Niles, the former Hertha (Koehn) Sigwold, who survives. He is also survived by two daughters, Judy (Ron) Phillips of Niles and Cathy (Win) Lindner of South Bend; a son, James (Anchalee) Voogd of Oak Leaf, Texas; two stepdaughters, Susie (Bob) Hamrick of South Bend and Sonja Stanton of Mishawaka; nine grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Cornelia Wendt of Yalaha, Florida, and Francine Brown of Norton Shores, Michigan.
