Parents
BASIC FACTS
Luella Toppan Baird was born in December 1886 in Newton Highlands, Middlesex Co., Massachusetts.3 She and Lorman Edward Roberts were married on 9 May 1913 in Manhattan Borough, New York City, New York Co., New York.4,3 She died on 18 February 1914, at age 27, in New York Co., New York.5,6 Luella Toppan Baird had reference number 50530. She was enumerated on the census in New York County, New York (1900.) Luella's identity is a guess. In the 1920 Census, Lorman is living with Luella's parents. He is listed as a widowed son-in-law. Luella is shown with her family in the 1900 Census. Her mother had five children and four are shown in the 1900 Census. (The missing child, Louis T. Baird, died at birth -see Massachusetts Birth Records.) Of the two girls, Ivy married and had a long life. Luella is not found after the 1900 Census.
Note: Since writing the above, I have found their marriage certificate and Luella's death record. One wonders if she died in childbirth. On their marriage certificate Lorman said that this was his first marriage. My information is that this was his second marriage.

OBITUARY
Frank S. Lanou died peacefully on April 8, 2005, after a long and difficult struggle with Parkinson's disease. His ashes will be scattered during a private, family service. A celebration of his life will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 7, 2005 at the Oakwood Memorial Chapel, 3301 Paul Sweet Road, Santa Cruz.
Frank was born in Allentown, Pennsylvania on October 2, 1934 but grew up in San Francisco and Carmel, California. He graduated from Occidental College then obtained his Masters in Theology from Union Theological Seminary, New York City in 1960 and his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Adelphi University in Long Island, NY in 1967.
He returned to California in 1973 as Director of Santa Cruz County Mental Health Services. He remained in that position until he opened his private practice in 1976. During Frank’s long and successful professional career he founded the Hospice Caring Project of Santa Cruz, the Monterey Bay Psychological Association, and Project Cope, an open forum for those local citizens who have survived natural disasters. He was also a pioneer in establishing the mental health component that would go into the field with the local Red Cross after a disaster. He was sent to the Oakland hills after the fire in 1991 and to Florida after Hurricane Andrew in 1992. Frank served on several local boards including the Dominican Hospital Psychiatric and Psychological Board and the Cabrillo Music Festival Board. His last major professional accomplishment was to lead a team of fellow psychologists in establishing their own HMO, Behavioral Health Care Inc. His professional philosophy was that survivors of disaster caused by any kind of violence needed treatment that included love and caring. He closed his practice and retired from the profession in 2001, although he continued to maintain connections with colleagues and professional events until his death.
Just as Frank’s professional life was spread over a wide range so too was his family. His "mother-like-person," Bernadean Bolander and stepson, Peter Lienemann, preceded him in death. He leaves a large immediate and extended family including many who were there to support him through his illness and death. He is survived by his wife, Meg Lilienthal, his children Lee, Mark, Amy, and Randy Lanou and his granddaughter Samantha Lanou. His wider surviving family includes Sandy Kinzie, Lori Scappino, Jesse Lanou, Chrystal Storey Richardson, Barbara Lee Smith and many friends who were like family to him, especially Wes Beach and Dennis Hostetter. Doctors Evans Whitaker and Josh Novic of Santa Cruz Medical Clinic, the health care professionals at the Cabrillo College Stroke Center and the Santa Cruz Healthcare Center, and his fellow sufferers and caregivers of the Parkinson’s Support Group are to be especially thanked for supporting and guiding him and his family through his illness.
Frank’s favorite pastime of all was tennis ? to watch it! He enjoyed playing games of strategy especially chess. His favorite restaurant was the ‘Silver Spur,’ not only for the good food but also for the lasting friendships he enjoyed with the staff.
Frank left us with a poem he wrote sometime during the last year of his life:
Struggle is my main process.
‘Smooth and easy’ is my mantra.
‘I think I can’ gives me motive power.
‘I did it’ is my cry of triumph.
‘Whew’ I can rest now is my sigh of relief.
Frustration is my daily experience.
Joy is my daily deliverance.
Humor provides perspective.
Grace and giving satisfy me deeply.
He died with grace and gave away his heart to the very end. He will be missed.
