Police link recent deaths to narcotics
A Lincoln man was indicted by a federal grand jury Monday for the distribution of heroin that resulted in at least five deaths within the past two years. Michael G. Heavican, United States Attorney for Nebraska, said Michael D. Siegrist, 29, of 2611 S. 41st St. was expected to appear in federal district court today. Heavican said Siegrist faced between 20 years and life imprisonment. Heavican said the indictment was the result of an ongoing investigation by the Lincoln Police Department and other law enforcement agencies into eight deaths dating back to 1998. The five confirmed deaths, which all occurred in Lincoln, are: Kelli Williamsen, found dead by her father at home on Nov. 11 1998; Jeffrey Bayer, a former Lincoln high school teacher, found dead in a motel room by an acquaintance on Feb. 26, 2001; Craig Hofer, found dead by his wife at home on May 10, 2001; Joseph Huffman, who was found unresponsive at home by a roommate on May 26, 2001, and died at the hospital the following day; Rodney Humpal, found dead at home by his son on Aug. 9, 2001. Lincoln Police Chief Tom Casady said the overdose deaths were thought to be linked to an opiate drug, a class of drugs that includes heroin. The death of Jamie Bayer on Dec. 26, 1999, was determined to be asthma, Casady said, but police think illegal drugs found in her bloodstream had at least a minimum contribution to her death. Police are awaiting toxicology tests in two other deaths that also appear to be drug-related, Casady said. This weekend, Lincoln Police arrested three other people on state charges related to the cases. Brian A. Young, 1824 Garfield St., was arrested on Friday for tampering with physical evidence, a class four felony punishable by up to five years in prison and a fine of $10,000. Young's arrest affidavit alleges he removed evidence from the scene of the death of Huffman before police arrived. George Shaner, 850 W. Burnham St., was arrested Sunday on a charge of tampering with a witness, also a class four felony. Shaner's arrest affidavit indicated he attempted to influence a witness in the death of Jeffrey Bayer. Police also arrested Jennifer C. Mertlik-Bayer, 1812 A St., on a charge of false reporting in the case of Bayer, a class one misdemeanor punishable by imprisonment of up to one year and a fine of $1,000. Heavican said unlike the use of methamphetamines, heroin use historically had not been an issue in Lincoln, but has created problems on the East Coast and larger cities in the country. "This reminds us the drug problem is not confined to one particular type of drug," he said. Heroin and other narcotics depress the central nervous system and can be deadly especially when combined with other drugs, Heavican said. "Especially with other depressants such as alcohol, the risk of death is considerable," he said. The investigation is continuing, Casady said, and he expects more arrests and indictments to occur. Casady called the deaths and their relation to opiates "startling." "I don't think we've ever been involved in an investigation like this where this many deaths have been linked together," he said.
DEATH NOTICE - York News-Times (NE), Friday, November 8, 2002
Michael Siegrist: Lincoln man convicted in heroin case found dead:
LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) -- A man convicted in a heroin probe has been found dead in his mother's house.
Michael Siegrist's mother found him Wednesday in bed.
Siegrist, 29, was charged in April with distribution of heroin resulting in the death of 28-year-old Craig A. Hofer. Hofer was found dead May 10, 2001, in his Lincoln apartment.
Siegrist pleaded guilty last week and was set to be sentenced in January. He faced 20 years to life in prison and up to a $1 million fine.
An autopsy was ordered. Police Chief Tom Casady said investigators found no evidence of homicide, but he would not say whether Siegrist's death appeared natural.
