In compliment to Miss Mary Ann Nicholson, bride-elect of October, Mrs. Clyde Stroup was a bridge hostess last Wednesday evening at her home on Clark Ave. Miss Nicholson's marriage to Bryan Halislip will take place on October 3.
A gift of crystal was presented the honor guest and prizes to the bridge winners, Mrs. Ann Cloyd Thornbury and Miss Craigie Curley.
The bridal couple-elect were honored when Mr. and Mrs. Merle F. Showalter and their daughter, Mrs. Martha S. Hannah, entertained at a buffet supper at the Showalter home on Barmettler St. Special guests were Mr. and Mrs. James L. Nicholson, parents of the bride elect. Corsages were presented Miss Nicholson and her mother.

MILDRED E. SHOWALTER, Mrs. Mildred Elizabeth S. Zirkle, age79, passed away at her residence in Springmoor on Wednesday, June 9th, 2004. Mildred was born in Fayetteville, Arkansas on August 31st, 1925 to Merle F. and Mary B. Showalter. The family moved to Raleigh N.C. in 1929 where her father was professor of chemistry until 1958. She graduated from Broughton High School and received a degree in Pharmacology at UNC Chapel Hill, having lead the State Boards. She taught English at the University of Texas in Austin, then was hired at SmithKline Labs in Philadelphia where she met her husband, Dr. Charles L. Zirkle. They were married in Raleigh in 1949 and moved to the suburban Philadelphia where they remained until the past five years. She was a devoted, loyal and loving wife and mother. A fierce supporter of education. A great and generous humanitarian. A champion of the less fortunate. And a friend of all who knew her. A memorial service will be held on Monday, June 14th at the Stewart Healthcare Center, 2nd Floor at Springmoor, Springmoor Drive, Raleigh at 2:00pm. A private family Internment will follow at Montlawn Memorial Park, 2911 South Wilmington St. Raleigh NC 27603. Mildred is survived by her loving husband of 55 years, Charles Zirkle, her daughter Patricia A. Claypool, son-in-law James and their children, Anderson and Victoria, her brother Merle Roberts Showalter and family and her sister Martha L. Ashcraft and family. ASHCRAFT, Martha (Showalter) 88, of Largo, passed away Aug. 3rd, 2010. She was preceded in death by her sister Mildred S. Zirkle and is survived by her husband, Thomas L. Ashcraft; her son Charles G. Hannah of Syracuse, NY; her brother, Merle Showalter of Richmond, VA; her stepdaughter, Anne Maher and stepson Thomas W. Ashcraft; her step granddaughter, Amanda Croxton; three nieces and two nephews. A resident of Washington, DC for many years, Martha was a member of the staff of New York Senator Kenneth Keating, served as Sub-Committee Clerk for the House Committee on Agriculture and served on the staff of Tennessee Senator James Sasser. Miss Martha L. Showalter Weds James Hannah of Johnson City
A surprise announcement is that the marriage of Miss Martha L. Showalter of Kingsport to James A. Hannah of Johnson City, which took place quietly on July 22 in Hartwell, Ga.
Formal announcements of the nuptials were placed in the mail last week by the bride's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Merle F. Showalter of Raleigh, N.C.
The popular bride and her husband are making their home in Johnson City, where Mr. Hannah is associated with Hannah's Men's Store. The couple plan to leave next week on a delayed honeymoon at Daytona Beach, Fla.
A resident of Kingsport for the past four years, where she has been well known in social circles, the bride holds a secretarial position at Tennessee Eastman Corporation. She is a graduate of the Women's College of the University of North Carolina, and has been an active member of the Kingsport Girl's Cotillion Club.
Mr. Hannah is a son of Mrs. C. G. Hannah of Johnson City, and was recently discharged after serving four years in the Army.
Several bridal parties are planned to compliment the bride. Inaugurating the functions, Mrs. Cleo Cox and Mrs. John R. Burns (Martha Thornton) joined in arranging a recent miscellanous shower party at the home of Mrs. Cox at Cliffside.
A desert course was served upon the arrival of the guests, after which tables were arranged
for contract [bridge?]. High score winner was Miss. Estelle Penn; second high, Miss Julia Pierce, and bingo, Mrs. John Ben Pectol. Later in the evening, the bride was presented a number of miscellaneous gifts for her new home.
Guests invited to fete Mrs. Hannah were Mrs. John Ben Pectol, Mrs. George Weisslinger, Mrs. Fred Brewer of Johnson City, Misses Eliza Pectol, Sybil Wimmer, Mary Elizabeth Thornton, Lucille Jennings, Emily Jennings, Estelle Penn, Julia Pierce and Meredith Pittard of Johnson City.
