Betty J. (Buehler) Joekel, 76 years of age, of rural Sterling, passed away Friday morning, Dec. 11, 2009, at the Johnson County Hospital in Tecumseh, Neb.
She was born July 26, 1933, to Harry A. and Verna G. Buehler at rural Sterling,? She lived in the Sterling area her whole life except for a year when her husband was stationed at Ft. Riley, Kan. She graduated in 1951 from Adams High School. After high school, Betty taught one year at Wooden Shoe Grade School in Lancaster County.
She married Keith D. Joekel on May 27, 1952, in the Hopewell United Methodist Church at rural Sterling,? Betty spent the majority of her life helping her husband on the farm. Betty was a member of the Hopewell United Methodist Church, where she was a member of the church women, serving as president, vice president, secretary, and many other offices. She also held several positions on the Country Cousins Extension Club.
Betty served as a secretary on the Johnson County Extension Council, was a member of the Johnson County absentee counting board, was a Republican co-committee woman in Vesta precinct and served on the election counting board. Betty belonged to the Adams VFW Auxiliary, where she was serving currently as chaplain. She was a former member of the Crab Orchard Grange and was an assistant 4-H leader in Home Economics. Betty especially enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, singing in many musical groups in the church and community, as well as a soloist. She also loved sewing, quilting, painting, basket weaving, crafts, gardening and was an avid contributor to the Johnson County fair, entering in various exhibits and even won a trophy for baked goods this past year.
Betty is survived by her husband, Keith; two sons, the Rev. Kenneth Joekel and wife Doreen of Beatrice,? Roger Joekel and wife Kathy of Gering; a daughter, Beth Firkins and husband Michael of Omaha; seven grandchildren, Kady Agena and husband Scott, Kyle Joekel, John Joekel and wife Mindy, Elizabeth Joekel, Kristine Firkins, Hailey Firkins, Andrew Firkins; three great-grandchildren, Hailey Joekel, Reese Agena, Abby Joekel; a brother, the Rev. Connie James Buehler and wife Marie of Hastings,; a brother-in-law, Dr. Ronald Joekel and wife Marjorie of Lincoln, Neb.; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Harry and Verna Buehler; an 11-year-old grandson, Jeffrey Joekel; a brother and sister-in-law, Robert Buehler and wife Lois; and a sister-in-law, Metta Buehler.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 16, in the Hopewell United Methodist Church of rural Sterling, with Pastor Jenae Bauer officiating. Interment will be in the Hopewell Cemetery at rural? Sterling. The body will lie in state from 2 p.m.-9 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 15, in the Griffiths-Hovendick Chapel in Adams, Neb., with the family greeting friends from 5 p.m.-7 p.m., and also at the church one hour preceding the service on Wednesday. A family prayer service will be held in the church basement at 10:15 a.m. on Wednesday. A memorial has been established to the familys choice with Roger Unvert in charge.
