Nellie Emily Grubb1,2,3
F, #4942, b. 24 January 1908, d. 31 July 2008
Parents
BASIC FACTS
Nellie Emily Grubb was born on 24 January 1908 in Gage Co., Nebraska.1,4 She and John Lindley Artman were married on 29 August 1933 in Independence, Jackson Co., Missouri.4 She died on 31 July 2008, at age 100. Nellie Emily Grubb had reference number 5204. Her Social Security Number was 489-24-4925, issued: Missouri, last residence, Fort Collins, Larimer Co., Colorado.5 Nellie and her siblings were all born in Gage County, Nebraska. On December 2, 1912, when Nellie was not quite four years old, the family moved to Okmulgee, Oklahoma. (I maybe off by a year here as Nellie says she was not quite five years old.) They bought a farm of 80 acres north of Morris and east of Okmulgee. Nellie remembers that they were living in a shack while their house was being built. Her father had dug a hole for a root cellar, but had not got the roof on yet. They had a big rain and the hole filled with water. A frog got into the water and Nellie was leaning over trying to grab it when she fell in. The water was mostly yellow mud and Nellie was covered from head to toe. She ran into the house bawling her head off. A neighbor was visiting at the time and from then on he would ask if she was going after any more frogs. Nellie's older sister, Pearl, was married in Okmulgee on November 1, 1914.
In 1915 Nellie's parents decided to move to Colorado. Nellie thinks that while they were on their way they stopped in Gage County, Nebraska to visit John and Ona Hillman. (Willie and Stella Grubb and John and Ona Hillman were good friends; each couple had been in the other's wedding party years before.) There is a picture of John, Ona and their four boys taken in front of a house. Ruben (Ruby) Hillman is in a wheelchair. Nellie thinks this picture was taken during their visit. (Stella's brother, Robert Hillman and his family were then living just a few miles away in Johnson County so the Grubbs probably would have visited them also.) The Grubbs finally arrived in Fort Collins, Colorado on May 17, 1915. They had been on the road a month.
It was during this time that Willie Grubb found work as an interior decorator. There were lots of fine homes in Fort Collins and Willie made good money. His grandson, Lowell Rodgers, recalls the following incident from that time. Willie owned a big, long sedan automobile. It had a large "S" on each of the hubcaps. One day it was parked at the curb of one of the two blocks in town that had paved streets. A lady that was walking by stopped to comment about the car. She said, "Mr. Grubb, is that a 'Spearse Arrow'?" Willie answered, "No mam, it's just a Studebaker." Well, the lady said she thought it was probably the finest automobile ever made. To which Willie commented that one car was pretty much like another -- they all ran on gasoline.
In 1920 the Grubbs decided to move to California. They left Fort Collins on Holloween night. There was a big snow storm and the train did not leave the station until 5:00 A.M. the next morning. The family lived in downtown Los Angeles for one month and then moved to the city of Long Beach. Willie Grubb worked at house painting and hanging wallpaper. They returned to Nebraska on December 2, 1921.
In the early 1920's the Grubbs moved to Kearny, Nebraska. It was on this trip that they stopped by to visit Rob and Anna Hillman in Bayard. Nellie remembers playing with Erma, Doris and Clarice and their cousin Amy Snyder who lived nearby. She remembers that they were sent out to feed the chickens. Corn and oats were kept in two large bins with slanted lids that were hinged in back. The corn was low in the bin so one of the young girls, probably Clarice or Marvel was let down into the bin to fill a bucket with corn. After the bucket was handed out, the older girls said that they were going to close the lid on the bin and leave the one inside. Nellie said the girl inside started to cry so she (Nellie) said she would stay with her until someone would come and get her out.
The Grubbs lived in Kearny for six or seven years. Stella Grubb earned extra money working as a "Practical Nurse," delivering twelve babies in the Kearny area. One of Nellie's cousins, Fern Snyder lived with them and worked at a cigar factory. Nellie worked at the phone company. Times were tough. Finally they let their house go back to its owner and started for Missouri. They got as far as Selina, Kansas when the car broke down. This was in November and the car was not fixed until the next May. Nellie got a job working as a telephone operator. Later she developed appendicitis. They decided to take her back to Windsor, Colorado for an operation. She had her appendix out on August 17, 1929.
[Here I'm going to inject a story told on Nellie by her nephew, Lowell Rodgers. Chronologically it fits about here in Nellie's recollections. In 1929, Nellie and her parents were living in Windsor, Colorado with their daughter Pearl Rodgers and her family. The house, that was too small for the Rodgers family, was way overcrowded with Nellie and her parents living there also. Nellie, who had always been spoiled by her father, was sharing a bedroom with the two Rodgers girls, Beulah and Lenna. Nellie was about 21 years old, Buelah was 13 and Lenna was about 8. Nellie had this very nice dresser set with a hair brush, mirror and comb. She came into the living room with sad eyes and complained to her father that someone had used her hair brush. Nellie had blond hair and there was a brown hair in the brush. Before she could go on, her sister Pearl said, "Nellie grow up! And Papa, you let her grow up." Lowell says he remembers this story because in those days it was unusual to tell your dad what to do, even if he was living in your house.]
The Grubbs finally did get to Missouri, arriving in Independence in 1930. Nellie was married to John Artman on August 29, 1933. At some point, Nellie, her husband John, Willie and Stella bought a large house and all lived together. Willie and Stella lived the rest of their lives in Missouri. Nellie and her husband eventually moved back to Fort Collins, Colorado. She was still living there in a nursing home in 2001. Judy and I try to stop by and see Nellie when we are traveling through Colorado.
