In Memorium

December, just the second day,
The message came from Iowa,
A message short but very sad,
The dreaded "flu" it's got the lad.
It's Edwin Starkebaum they say,
He passed away this very day.

Oh, yes, the news we must accept,
And if we never did expect
That such a life so well and stout
Should suddenly be fluttered out
Just when he was from morn till night
A-gathering hundreds with delight.

Only one score and three,
And now he's in Eternity.
He's gone the road we all must trod
When we are called to meet our God.
But not so soon, perhaps you say,
Beware, it could be yet today.

His body here before us cold.
Speaks to us now in words untold;
That life just at its very prime
Is subject to the trials of time,
And nothing in this world can save
Our mortal bodies from the grave.

The wonderous workings of God's hand,
We can not fully understand,
And tho' it seems so hard to bear,
We know God surely can not err.
His motives with all love adore,
At present and for evermore.

Mother, father, sister, brother,
We can command you to none other
Than just to Him, who loves us true
And goes with us the journey thru.
He never has and never will
Forget, forsake, He loves us still.

Oh! That this lesson we would learn,
That someone must be next in turn.
It may be I, it may be you,
And then perhaps some others, too.
But pray we'll meet them face to face
And all may say we're saved thru grace.

-- Wm. Buehler.
