Russell W. Sells Wounded Near Aachen, Germany
The 119th General Hospital, England -- (Spl)--Wounded by enemy shrapnel in the right hand and chest while fighting east of Aachen, Germany, Private First class Russell W. Sells, 19, of Piney Flats, Tennessee, is now recovering at this United States Army general hospital in England.
Pfc. Sells, who has been awarded the Purple Heart, "is making very satisfactory progress but will require further treatment," said his ward surgeon, First Lieutenant Richard J. Palmer of San Francisco, Calif.
"Our unit was preparing for a dawn attack," Pfc. Sells explained. "We had been posted as guards and told to be especially alert for enemy movement. All the enemy shells were passing overhead but one fell short and hit a tree nearby. I was hit by fragments."
Carried to an aid station by medical soldiers, Pfc. Sells received emergency treatment and was later taken to England.
He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. S. M. Sells of Piney Flats.

Russell Sells - PINEY FLATS
PINEY FLATS - Russell Wayne Sells, 82, of Piney Flats, passed away Thursday, January 24, 2008, at James H. Quillen VA Medical Center.
He was born in Sullivan Co. March 31, 1925, the son of the late Mert and Nora Milhorn Sells.
Mr. Sells was a Disabled American Veteran, having served his country with the US Army during WWII. In 1945, he came home a Purple Heart veteran. He was the oldest member and deacon of Deerlick Union Church in Piney Flats. He was a member of the VFW Post 9629 in Bluff City and a former member of Rocky Springs Ruritan.
His hobbies included going to the races, talking with friends on the CB radio, vacationing in Florida at the beach, farming and gardening.
Wayne will always be remembered as a loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was a caring friend and neighbor and will be missed dearly by all who knew him.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Susie Snyder; and 4 brothers, Landon, Roy, M.J. and James Sells.
Wayne is survived by his loving wife, Lucille Geisler Sells; a daughter, Donna Kay Bowers, of Piney Flats; 2 sons, Jerry Sells, of Blountville, and Larry Sells, of Piney Flats; 6 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; and many nieces & nephews.
The family of Mr. Sells will receive friends from 5-7 p.m. Sunday, January 27, 2008, at Snyder?s Funeral Home. The funeral service will follow at 7 p.m. with Rev. Don Morrell and Rev. Lenny Smith officiating.
The graveside service will be conducted Monday, January 28, 2008, at Mountain Home National Cemetery with Bristol VFW Honor Guard providing military honors. Those planning to attend are asked to meet at 12:15 p.m. at Snyder?s Funeral Home for the procession to the cemetery. Pallbearers will be Ralph Mooney, Jerry Presnell, Gary Sells, Rondy Sells, Wesley Morrell & Kenneth Geisler.
Serving the family of Mr. Sells is Snyder?s Funeral Home 5913 Kingsport Hwy. Gray (located 2 miles north of Zak?s Furniture). 477-7911.

KINGSPORT — Margaret Josephine Gracey Hale, 94, of Kingsport, passed away at Elmcroft Assisted Living in Florence, SC, on Sunday, March 20, 2011.
Josephine (Jo) was born in Cookeville, TN, and resided in Kingsport, TN, after WWII. She was married to Howard Hale for 56 years until his death in 2004.
Josephine received her B.S. from Tennessee Tech and taught at Columbia College in Columbia, SC, during the war. She received a M.S. from the University of TN and served as a Professor of Home Economics until marrying Howard. He also attended school there after WWII.
She was a member of First Broad Street Methodist Church and the Crusade Sunday School Class.
Survivors include her son, Jim Hale and wife, Cindy; two grandchildren, Hunter Travis Hale, Morgan Taylor Hale, all of Florence, SC; several nieces and nephews: Dr. Lloyd Jerry Story and wife, Ranny, Janelle Frazier, Linda Petitto and husband, John, all of Winston-Salem, NC, Danny Story and wife, Janie, Laverne Mackay and husband, Don, Virginia Ruth Beasley, all of Johnson City, Sharon Gracey Clark, of Conway, AR, Craig Gracey, of Nashville, TN.
Burial will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, March 24, 2011, at Oak Hill Memorial Park.
The memorial service will follow at 2:30 p.m. at First Broad Street United Methodist Church with Rev. Jack Weikel officiating. The family will receive friends following the memorial service at the church.
