KINGSPORT ? James Howard Hale, 89, of Kingsport, TN, passed away at McLeod Hospital in Florence, S.C., on Thursday, March 11, 2004. Howard was born in Boones Creek, TN, and resided in Kingsport after serving as a Lieutenant JG in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He graduated from Milligan College and the University of Tennessee. Howard retired from Tennessee Eastman Kodak after 31 years of service. He was a member of First Broad Street United Methodist Church and The Crusade Sunday School Class. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Josephine Gracey Hale, of the home; one son, Jim Hale and wife, Cindy; two grandchildren, Hunter Travis Hale and Morgan Taylor Hale, all of Florence, SC. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews, Dr. Lloyd Jerry Story and wife, Ranny, Janelle Frazier, Linda Petitto and husband, John, all of Winston-Salem, NC, Danny Story and wife, Janie, Laverne Mackay and husband, Don, and Virginia Ruth Beasley, all of Johnson City, TN. Burial will be at Oak Hill Memorial Park on Monday, March 15th at 2:00 p.m., followed by a memorial service at First Broad Street United Methodist Church at 2:30 p.m. with Rev. Jack Edwards and Rev. Jack Weikel officiating. The family will receive friends following the memorial service at the church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions may be given to the building fund at First Broad Street United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 1336, Kingsport, TN 37662. Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Homes, downtown Kingsport, is serving the Hale family.

KINGSPORT: Dalton Albert Giesler, 80, 109 Bridwell Heights Road, went to be with Jesus Thursday (May 18, 2000) at James H. Quillen Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Mountain Home, Tenn., after a long illness.
Born in Piney Flats, he was the son of the late William and Gertrude Almorade Giesler. He retired from Mead and was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of World War II, serving in Calcutta, India.
He was a member of Cedar View Independent Methodist Church serving on the official board.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Howard Giesler; sisters, Vasta Milhorn and Pauline Johnson; and stepmother, Lena Giesler.
Surviving are his loving wife of 57 years, Thelma Shaffer Giesler, of the home; daughters, Linda Hunt, Antioch, Tenn., and Kathy Collett, Blountville; son, Larry D. Music will be under the direction of the Cedar View Independent Methodist Church Choir.
The body will be taken to the church one hour prior to the service.
Burial will be in the East Lawn Memorial Park with full military honors conducted by the American Legion Hammond Post No. 3.

HOWARD P. GEISLER, born Dec. 26, 1923 in Piney Flats, TN to William P. (b. 1892, d. 1959) and Gertrude Almarode Geisler (b. 1896, d. 1928). He was a student of Mary Hughes High School. He later worked at Glen L. Martin's Aircraft, Baltimore, MD. He married Marie King of Memphis, TN.
He served in the U.S. Army in WWII as a combat infantryman. As a sharpshooter he saw action on the front lines in the European Theatre. Reported missing in action Sept. 11, 1944, then killed in action Sept. 23, 1944. Facts confirming his death were established Oct. 10, 1944.
He received the Purple Heart, Bronze Star, Good Conduct Medal, EAME Campaign Medal, WWII Victory Medal and Combat Infantry Badge.
Howard P. Geisler died in the service of his country, one among the unbroken line of patriots who dared to die that freedom might live and grow and increase its blessings. Freedom lives and through it he lives in a way that humbles the undertaking of most men.
Howard was a fifth generation descendant of Johann Adam Geisler (b. 1757, d. 1818), pioneer settler of Sullivan County, TN. John Adam purchased land in (now) Sullivan County in 1790. Settled in Sullivan County in 1814 from Adam County, PA.

In memory of Pvt. Howard P. Geisler, above, who died a year ago, on September 23, 1944, of wounds he received in action in France, his sister and three brothers have submitted the poem printed herewith.
Private Geisler's widow, Marie Geisler, resides in Memphis Tenn. He is the son of W. P. Geisler of Piney Flats. His sister and brothers are Mrs. Vasta Milhorn of Piney Flats, Carl Geisler, seaman second class serving with the Navy in the Pacific, Pvt. Dalton A. Geisler of the AAF in India, and Verlin Geisler, discharged on April 5 from naval service. The poem follows.

Funeral services for Mrs. Evelyn Pauline Johnson, age 50, Rt. 2, Piney Flats, who died Monday evening, will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday from the Appalachian Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. L. D. Lane and Rev. Leonard Smith, officiating. Burial will follow in the New Bethel Presbyterian Church Cemetery. Pallbearers will be selected from friends. Maryevva Gillikin - JOHNSON CITY
Maryevva Shipley Gillikin passed away on February 1, 2010.
She was the last living child of Zola and Faustine Shipley’s eight children. Maryevva was ninety-one years old, born in Blountville, Tennessee, on July 5, 1918.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John Wrenn Gillikin after fifty-eight years of marriage. She lived most of her adult life in Johnson City, Tennessee.
She is survived by two daughters, Ann Gillikin Woods and Jane Gillikin Daniel; five granddaughters, Heather Price Haynes, Holly Price Ellis, Mary Martha Daniel, Alice Woods Sword and Emily Woods Davis; three sons-in-law, William L. Woods, James K. Daniel and James L. Price; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Maryevva was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Johnson City. She was an avid gardener and a member of the Perennial Garden Club. She volunteered many hours at North Side Hospital in Johnson City. She excelled in her chosen profession as an outstanding mother and grandmother using her many skills as an excellent homemaker. She was also an officer in the Civinettes and a member of the Eastern Star, Nolichucky Chapter.
The family will receive friends from 1 until 1:50 Thursday afternoon, February 4th, at First Presbyterian Church in Bristol, Tennessee.
A celebration of Mrs. Gillikin’s life will be held at 2 o’clock with Dr. Gordon Turnbull officiating.
Following the celebration service, a committal service will be held at Monte Vista Memorial Gardens in Johnson City. Pallbearers will be James K. Daniel Jr., Andrew B. Ellis, James L. Price, Lewis E. Shipley, Walker D. Tanner and Wyatt T. Tanner.
The continual prayers, fellowship, and love of the First Presbyterian Churches has comforted us throughout her life and the blessings of this journey.

John W. Gillikin, 85, 1705 E. Oakland Ave., died Wednesday, Oct. 24, 2001, at Johnson City Medical Center after a brief illness.
Mr. Gillikin was a Goldsboro, N.C. native and had lived in Johnson City for most of his life. He was a son of the late Uriah M. and Mary E. Wrenn Gillikin.
Mr. Gillikin retired from Pet Dairy's general office, where he worked in accounting and finance for 42 years.
He attended Wake Forest University and was a graduate of Bowling Green College of Commerce.
Mr. Gillikin was a member of First Presbyterian Church, where he served as an elder, was a former treasurer and past president of the Brotherhood Bible Class.
He was a past director of the Haven of Mercy and a charter member of the Nativic Civitan Club.
Mr. Gillikin was a former Mason and Shriner of the Kerbela Temple and past president of the Johnson City Shrine Club.
He was a past president of the Hilltopper Sports Club and was named outstanding Hilltopper sports fan in 1963.
Mr. Gillikin was a member of the Adult Chapter of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
He was a former chairman of the Johnson City Park and Recreation board and was inducted into its Wall of Fame in 1989.
Mr. Gillikin was a former Johnson City Regional Planning Commission vice chairman.
He was appointed as a colonel to former Governor Ned McWherter's staff in 1987 and was past zone chairman for the Washington County Democratic Party.
Mr. Gillikin was preceded in death by three brothers, Lester Gillikin, Paul Gillikin and Charles Gillikin.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Maryevva Shipley Gillikin; two daughters, Ann Woods and Jane Daniels, both of Bristol; three granddaughters, Holly Price and Heather Price, both of Knoxville, and Mary Martha Daniels, Bristol; and several nieces and nephews.
