Virginia Page "Vergie" Giesler1,2
F, #14566, b. 12 February 1879, d. 23 July 1959
Parents
BASIC FACTS
Virginia Page "Vergie" Giesler was born on 12 February 1879 in Kimball, Hansford Co., Texas.1 She and Robert Montgomery Wynne were married on 24 July 1902 in Temple, Texas.1 She died on 23 July 1959, at age 80, in Port Arthur, Jefferson Co., Texas.1 She was buried in Bay City, Matagorda Co., Texas.1 Virginia Page "Vergie" Giesler was also known as Vergie. She had reference number 14834. Virginia Page Giesler (called Virgie), daughter of David Alexander Giesler and Mary Catherine (Kate) Edwards, was born in Kimball, Texas where her father was a physician. In the early 1890's the Giesler family moved to Temple, Texas where Virginia attended the Sam Houston Normal Institute (Now Sam Houston College) and then returned to Temple to teach school. She soon met a local merchant, Robert Montgomery Wynne, son of Robert Wynne and Elizabeth Wynne who were first cousins. Robert Montgomery Wynne was 26 years older than Virginia. When the railroad from Houston to Brownsville opened up much new territory to settlers, Robert decided to follow the advice of a friend and move to Bay City, Texas where he opened a wholesale grocery store. He then returned to Temple, married Virginia and took his new bride to his new home in Bay City where their three sons and a daughter (who died in childbirth) were born and reared.
Virginia Giesler was a small person, about five feet, four inches tall, always maintained her slight figure. Although she was beautiful, she felt that vanity was not good and, therefore, did not play upon her beauty, but she always maintained a very neat appearance. Like her mother, Virginia was very active and had a very strong personality. She was fiercely loyal and devoted to her family and always maintained a close relationship to her brothers and sisters, writing each of them a letter every Sunday. She was also devoted to duty and although she did not play. but rather spent her time calling upon her friends and neighbors, working with young people, doing beautiful handwork, and teaching school and Bible classes, she sometimes played checkers with her grandsons because she loved children so. She loved church and seldom missed going. She was well respected by both young and old. She was sympathetic towards those less fortunate than she and was always available to lend a hand when needed. Robert Montgomery Wynne died in 1934 and his widow died in 1959. Following is the script of a radio program broadcast November 28, 1954 in Bay City, Texas in tribute of Virginia Page Giesler Wynne:
"This woman has lived a beautiful and unselfish life -- in devoting herself toward the uplift of the youth of her community -- our community of Bay City. She has taken a very active part in the development of the religious and educational growth in Bay City -- and has given generously and unselfishly of her talents and time for the betterment of all with whom she has worked. An orchid to you Virginia Giesler Wynne -- for your more than active participation in the growth and development of Bay City -- for your leadership in helping make Bay City a better and happier place in which to live. Mrs Virginia Giesler Wynne is the second of seven children born to Dr. and Mrs. David Alexander Giesler more than seventy years ago in the small community of Kimball, Texas. The family moved to Temple, Texas where Virginia completed elementary and high school -- after which she attended what was then known as Sam Houston Normal Institute. After graduation in 1897 from this renowned school, which today all know as Sam Houston State, she accepted her first teaching job in the small settlement of Bell Falls. During her stay in that community, she lived in the home of W. D. Boney -- and by coincidence, three of the small children in that home the year she lived there are now prominent Bay City citizens; Mrs. Fred Fields, Mrs. Percy Hamil, and Mrs. Alvin Williams.
Following Mrs. Wynne's teaching in Bell Falls, she taught in the Temple school system till 1902, and it was at this time that she moved to Bay City as the bride of Mr. Robert Montgomery Wynne. In that year, there were only four permanent buildings in Bay City. All the other structures were either tents or shacks. After her arrival in Bay City Virginia took time out from teaching for sufficient time to bring up three children: David G. Wynne who now resides in Houston. Robert E. Wynne who lives in Dallas, and Milton M. Wynne, who makes his home in Port Arthur. All are presently successful business men.
Mrs. Virginia Giesler Wynne began her teaching here in Bay City in 1920 as a 6th grade teacher, and later taught mathematics. She has taught for a total of 36 years in Texas Public Schools, and in that time she has never been tardy, and has missed only three days. For two days one of her children was sick, and the third day missed was for the funeral of her husband. Because of this devotion to duty there is today in the Bay City school, a plaque in honor of Mrs. Wynne commemorating her long and outstanding teaching career.
Now in addition to this remarkable teaching record, Mrs Virginia Giesler Wynne, for many years, taught the women's Bible class in the First Presbyterian Church of which she is a member -- and she has also been a Sunday school teacher for many years. She is a lifetime member of the Texas Teacher's Association and receives enjoyment from helping the poor and seeing her students go on to completion of school and successful careers. Perhaps she is happiest in knowing that one of her students, after completing school here in Bay City, went on to become Valedictorian at Texan A & M College in the graduation class of more than a thousand students.
If a favorite food for Mrs. Wynne were named, it would probably be barbecue. Her favorite colors are Lavender and pink and her favorite pastime is crocheting and she has made some very lovely tablecloths and bedspreads and spread additional joy by presenting them as gifts. Mrs Wynne is also a lover of religious music. She sometimes helps engineers for the various oil companies in the solution of mathematical problems which arise from time to time.
And now, Mrs. Virginia Giesler Wynne, because you have given our community unselfishly of yourself, because of he inspiring leadership you have given to educational and church groups, and because you have brought intellectual and scholastic light into our lives, because by your efforts and striving you have helped make Bay City a happier and better place for all of us to live in, a representative of the Bay City Floral Company stands outside your door -- waiting to present -- an ORCHID TO YOU from Modern Interiors in Bay City.

BOTH DROWNED
Temple, Tex., July 29 - Yesterday evening the two little sons of "Doc" Geisler, Express messenger on the San Angela branch were buried in one grave. They had gone to the Leon river to fish the day before, with some other small boys, and while fooling around the race at the Belton electric light company's plant, the younger one, Rob, aged 9 years, fell into the water and the older brother, Dave, age 11 years, sprang in to rescue him. Both were drowned, and the boys who were with them were too scared to report.
It was not until Mr. Geisler hunted up the companions of his boys during the night that he learned of their fate. The bodies were recovered after several hours' search. Mr. Giesler had seven children, but these two were the only boys.
