During the 1954-55 school year, she was acting principal of Northside following the death of Miss Helen McLeod in 1954. Carmel preceded principals Tyson Jones and Everett Rowe. She was the daughter of James S. and Edna King and lived with her parents on West Holston, near the school.

Miss King was a member of Munsey Memorial United Methodist Church and the administrative board. She was a member of Fellowship Sunday school class where she served as secretary and treasure.
She also was a member of Sunshine Group, Bertha Range Circle #12 and the Caring Group.
Miss King was a graduate of Science Hill High School and East Tennessee State University and a member of Alpha Delta Kappa honorary teachers' sorority.
She had taught in the Johnson City School System more than 37 years at Henry Johnson School. She was a life member of Parent-Teacher Association and also a member of Retired Teachers’ Association of Washington County.
She was a member of American Association of Retired Persons.
Miss King was a member of the Monday Club, Pioneer Home Demonstration Club, Barnes Demonstration Club, Sewing Circle and Canasta Club.

Mrs. Rupert was a Johnson City native and had lived here most of her life. She was a daughter of Ruth King Hartley, Johnson City and the late Joseph Luke Hartley Sr.
Mrs. Rupert was a graduate of Wilkesboro (N.C.) Senior High School and attended Appalachian State University, Boone, N.C. She received a bachelor's degree in music and education from Newberry (S.C.) College and a master's degree in education from East Tennessee State University.
Mrs. Rupert retired from Volunteer High School, Church Hill, where she taught English and French.

Fairlena G. Hodge
Fairlena Gladys Hodge, 89, formerly of 477 Range Road, Piney Flats, died Tuesday, January 11, 2005, at Laughlin Memorial Hospital, Greeneville.
Mrs. Hodge was a native of Carter County and had lived most of her life in Sullivan County before moving to Greeneville in 1997. She was a daughter of the late William Odell and Flora Taylor Frazier and was also preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Vernon Hodge, in 1987, a son, James Hodge, and by four sisters and a brother.
Mrs. Hodge attended New Bethel Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include three daughters and sons-in-law, Carolyn Jane and U.L. Carrier and Margaret and Bill Snapp, all of Piney Flats, and Geraldine and Jack Wilson, Greeneville; a grandson, Jamie Snapp, Johnson City; and six granddaughters, Kathy Carrier, Tampa, Fla., Carolyn Carrier, Piney Flats, Melissa Gent, Bristol, Susan Harris and Julia Johnson, both of Greeneville, and Lisa Wilson, Port Carroll, Fla. Seven great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive.
Graveside funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, January 13, at New Bethel Cemetery, Piney Flats, with Terry Wright, minister, officiating. Family and friends are asked to assemble at the cemetery. Pallbearers will be Gary Johnson, Doug Harris, Jeremy Johnson and David Harris. Online condolences may be made via www.morrisbaker.com.
