Ben J. Keebler
Ben J. Keebler, 75, a widely-known Greeneville physician, died Monday morning at Johnson City Medical Center after suffering a mild stroke on Dec. 19 and a severe stroke on Jan. 3.
He was initially hospitalized at Laughlin Memorial Hospital, and later moved to Johnson City Medical Center.
A native of Greeneville, Dr. Keebler was graduated from Tennessee Military Institute in 1948.
He attended Duke University and Tusculum College, where he was a Charles Oliver Gray scholar.
In 1954, he was graduated from the University of Tennessee Medical School in Memphis, where he was a member of Phi Chi medical fraternity.
After his internship in Greenville, S.C., he entered the U.S. Air Force, where he was a flight surgeon from 1955-1957. He served at Dyess Air Force Base in Abilene, Texas, and in Alaska and the Philippines.
He then returned to Greeneville and had practiced medicine here for 50 years.
He was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church, a member of the Tennessee Medical Association, and a charter member of the board of directors of Laughlin Memorial Hospital.
Dr. Keebler was an avid supporter of a number of charities.
His family noted, "He was an avid gardener and model train collector. He also enjoyed playing golf.
"He was very dedicated in his profession and loved his patients very much."
He is survived by his wife of 49 years: Madeline E. Keebler; a daughter and son-in-law: Karen and Tim Teague; a son: Randell Keebler; a granddaughter: Madeline "Madi" Teague; two special cousins: U.S. Keebler III of Limestone and Gayle Arnold of Johnson City; and his "devoted office staff": Cheryl Bowman, Sudie Miller and Nancy Pierce.
He was a son of the late Ben and Margaret Keebler.
The family will receive friends from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at Doughty-Stevens Funeral Home.
The funeral service will be held at 11 o'clock Thursday morning in the funeral home chapel. The Rev. Dr. Roy Blakeburn will officiate.
Entombment will follow in GreeneLawn Mausoleum.
Pallbearers will be Dr. Walter Mason, Dr. Joe Austin, Dr. George Scott, Ray Adams, Chuck Whitfield, and Dr. Anderson Susong.
Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Nathan Horner, Dr. James Easterly, Jack Wilson, Judge Joe A. Tilson, Judge Thomas G. Hull, Herbert Whitfield, and the members of the board of directors and medical staff of Laughlin Memorial Hospital.
Memorial contributions may be made to Dr. C.B. Laughlin Memorial Scholarship Fund, c/o Laughlin Healthcare Foundation, 1420 Tusculum Blvd., Greeneville, TN 37745. (Dr. and Mrs. Keebler established the fund to honor Dr. Laughlin, who was Dr. Keebler's inspiration and mentor.)
