HEART ATTACK TAKES POPULAR COURT LEADER
---------------------
Limestone Man Stricken While Preparing For Morning Meal
---------------------
PASSING PARALLELS THAT OF MONGOLD
----------------------
Expressions of Sorrow Widespread; Payne May Be Successor
----------------------
County Judge Uel G. Bolton, 56, who for the past 15 months had served as chairman of Washington county court, died about 6:30 a. m. today of heart failure at his home in the eighteenth civil district, three miles north of Limestone.
Judge Bolton, who became court chairman upon the death of Judge John M. Mongold on October 19, 1936, under circumstances similar to his own passing today, had not been considered in poor health, and his death came as a shock to relatives and friends. Expressions of regret at his loss were widespread.
Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p. m. Friday at Mt. Bethel Christian church, members of the family announced this afternoon. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Survivors include Judge Bolton's wife; his daughter, Mrs. Rex Brockwell, who made her home with her parents; and two sisters, Mrs. C. H. Pruett of Bluefield of Bluefield, W. Va., and Mrs. A. S. Myhr, wife of a Christian minister at Belleview, Tenn., near Nashville.
Preparing For Breakfast.
This afternoon Mrs. Brockwell said her father died as he was dressing to go to breakfast. Overcome by a sudden heart attack, he slumped to the floor and died almost instantly, she related.
Judge Bolton was born May 20, 1881 and (had lived nearly) his entire life in the Limestone section. His principal business interests (were) farming and operating a dairy, but he was at one time proprietor of a hardware store at Limestone and was also sales representative of the Mutual Insurance Association conducted by Washington county farmers.
At the time of Judge Mongold's death, Bolton was a deputy county tax assessor. Almost as soon as it was learned that Mongold, also the victim of heart trouble, had been found dead in a washroom adjoining the chamber in which he was to preside that morning over a special session of the county court, the eighteenth district to appoint someone to sit in the late Judge's place until the coming election.
Among expressions of sorrow at judge Bolton's passing were many from former neighbors as well as from Washington countians who knew him chiefly because of his association with county work.
Jack H. Knight, circuit court clerk, who formerly resided near Judge Bolton's home, said: "I had a very pleasant conversation with Judge Bolton only yesterday. I had known him nearly all my life, and always regarded him as a splendid man." Knight's deputy clerk, Irma Bowman, recalled that she and the county chairman were born on the same day of the year, and enjoyed a birthday dinner together last August.
Judge Guy S. Chase said he formerly lived about six miles distant from Bolton and felt the utmost sorrow at learning of his death. "He was a fine citizen and a dear friend of mine," he said.
Squire Bynum Chase, brother to Judge Chase, said: "Uel Bolton was one of the best men in Washington county. He could always be banked on to the right thing. It will be hard to replace him."
Mayor Marion Sell said he was distressed to hear of Judge Bolton's death. He added: "I have never heard anyone say a word against him as a man or as an administrator."
J. Finch Skipworth, deputy county trustee, said: "Judge Bolton's death is a heavy loss to our county. Like everyone else who knew him, I liked and respected him."
Magistrate L. W. Qakes expressed himself as "surprised and shocked" to learn of Bolton's passing. "My association with him was close," he said, "and I had formed a sincere admiration for his may good qualities. He certainly will be missed."
John Shanks and Gordon Lyle, local tobacco warehouse workers who had known Judge Bolton intimately for many years, also expressed deep sorrow.
Virtually all who commented praised Judge Bolton for having continued the "economy policies inaugurated by Judge Mongold, with the result that the county's financial condition consistently improved during his tenure of office.
Ministers Announced
Officiating ministers at the funeral services, it was announced this afternoon, will be Rev. John H. Keplinger of Morristown, Rev. J. N. Shephard of Milligan and Rev. P. H. Horner of Limestone. The Junior Order of American Mechanics will be in charge of ceremonies at the cemetery.
Pallbearers will be: Ernest Story, Horace Hartman, Hugh Cox, Dewey Leonard, Blaine May and Robert M. May.
